And they're off ! An impressive Liverpool victory against Norwich putting context to their brilliant promo season - ''Norwich started with eight of the players who began the last game of their Championship winning campaign''. I wonder if that faith will pay off for Norwich through the season ?

Let's see how Man City do without Kompany and with Mahrez playing more in Sane's absence. Big spenders again.

Man Utd lose the difficult Lukaku and keep the difficult Pogba - pundits saying Utd are very thin in midfield but have 7 senior centre backs on the books  :o  I hope flying Daniel James does well. OGS putting faith in youngsters and it'd be great to see that workout - but a poor start will see the vultures circling again.

I'm guessing Chelsea will do well with Lampard at the helm - top Guy IMO. CFC to beat Man Utd ?

Spurs have made some canny signings and Arsenal seem to have done sharp business. Disturbing news that Ozil and Kolazinac are not in the squad for Newcastle for 'security reasons'   :o  WHAT is going on there ?

If it should be raining up there, spend 2 minutes watching Don Rogers and Crystal Palace beat Man Utd 5-0 in 1972 - what an amazing Player he was . . .

From my dear ole' Torquay United there's been a few fine centre backs go up the Leagues (we get lots of practice defending) - I recall Matthew Elliot (Leicester and Scotland), Darren Moore (West Brom etc), Mike Williamson (Southampton and Newcastle) and latterly, Angus McDonald who went to Hull City via Barnsley.

He hasn't quite set the football world alight but having just recovered from DVT after a year off, he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer - just 26 years old. Wishing you all the best Angus . . .

Charlie Cooke was in the team as well! Great clip. Rogers ball control on those pitches was something else!

Hi Caller - I freely admit Don Rogers is my hero  8)   Saw his first game for Swindon Reserves when he was 16 - autograph and all   ;)   Once saw him take Peter Rodriguez (Leicester and Wales) from corner flag area diagonal to the other end, back to the penalty area to slot it in, evading numerous tackles on the way !

This prog shows the 1969 defeat of Arsenal at a ploughed Wembley but at 19.40 secs, there's a better look at that Man Utd game. He could have scored a few more that day !

The new goalkick rule is causing havoc at top clubs. Both Man City and Arsenal concede goals trying to play out from a goal kick while being pressed. Occasionally it might be better to just hoof it up the pitch especially as this will bypass half the opposition.

Wayne Rooney will shortly return to English football at Derby County - I wonder how much they are paying him and how that will affect the motivations in the rest of the Squad ? His Missis will be glad to have him back in the range of a swift left hook to help him behave himself. (Wayne's younger Brother John turns out for Barrow at Torquay today).

Goalkeepers - always most open to criticism . . . Sheff Utd's Dean Henderson lets in a goal that Geoff Boycott's Mum would have saved and he makes the England squad shortly afterwards ! NO excuse for him but generally, since the introduction of the lighter footballs many decades ago, you just don't see a Goalie give consistent faultless displays - these balls travel much faster and swerve markedly. Ron Springett, Gordon Banks, Peter Downsborough  ;)  and Peter Shilton couldn't look as good these days. Another point - Goalies seem to be coached to stay low not stand up and IMO it's wrong - an EPL Goalie last weekend - the attacker about 4 metres out on the left, angle maybe 15 degrees, the Goalie has narrowed the angle but is on his knees and the shot goes in over his low head and hands   ???   Effing stand up   ;)   No need to spread to cover a 15 degree angle   ::)

Spurs and Man Utd has faltered and have lost their way - at Man Utd that's despite having a squad with some on GBP200-350K per week. Arsenal flailing too and Ozil can't make the bench atm - GBP350K per week. Many Players reach a peak but don't sustain it - greedily signing Players at their peak on massive contracts means Clubs are then saddled with ransom wages. Man Utd's Sanchez comes to mind too. Just MO but a limit of GBP100K pw is enough and a 2 year rolling contract should also be the maximum allowed. The present situation is farcical and in the end, it's the Fans that pay for it, one way or another.

:o   :o  Leicester score NINE at Southampton   :o   :o  and whoops that happens to be more AWAY goals than Man Utd have scored in total since OGS took over in March   ::)

Liverpool have made an amazing start - last week's draw followed 17 successive EPL wins. Man City have a lot of injuries. My guess is that Liverpool are going to follow up their Champions League triumph with a long overdue EPL title this season . . . . .

Hi Alfie. There was debate on the Torquay Fan site about the decision to send off Junior John Rooney. Until someone enlightened us that he had screamed at close quarters to the REF - "You TW*T". He had to go. Quite charming. To be regretted as he has had a good season until then with 8 goals - the 3rd highest tally.

Brother Wayne as he reaches the end of his career faces a problem - is he going to get a managerial, coaching or punditry role later ?  A bucketful of goals at Derby will help but . . . .

Mourinho is back in the EPL at Spurs - Pochettino missed his moments to move on - not long ago Man Utd and Real Madrid were being touted. A strange happening after Spurs had such a great season last year but Poch was obviously 'down' - why ? IMO Spurs must be quite barmy to appoint Mourinho but let's see how it turns out   8)

As a Frank Lampard fan I'm chuffed to see a revitalised Chelsea and the youngsters doing so well. Leicester City on form again and who knows what they can do. The top four look set atm but it's hard to see anyone catching Liverpool now.

Man Utd fans must be miffed to see Chris Smalling doing so well at Roma and Lukaku banging in the goals too.

Wayne Rooney due to debut for Derby County on Jan 2nd - I wonder what he is costing them? I hope that move goes well but suspect Derby might have overstepped themselves  ::)

Decent saturday night football watching Mourinho's Spurs, Liverpool and Man City. West Ham were terrible, Palace unlucky while Chelsea played well at City. Foden came on for David Silva and improved the team, I think it is time for Guardiola to get Foden into the starting line up. VAR  is still spoling the game.

Twas the night before Christmas, Old Trafford was bare.
The staff all gone home, there was nobody there..
The lights cast a shadow, a soft glimmer which
lit up the soft green grass on the pitch.

Just as the clock gave out its twelfth chime
An old man appeared, as if frozen in time.
He gazed at the tunnel, then broke out in voice
"ITS TIME TO BEGIN.. LETS HAVE YOU MY BOYS"

Out from the tunnel appeared a lone figure
Same as in life, only infinitely bigger
The old man called out as he slowly drew near
"good evening Duncan, are the rest of you here"

The figure broke out in wide open smile
"Good Evening Sir Matt, it has been a long while
The rest are all coming, they'll be here soon,"
As seven more shadows were cast by the moon.

Whelan and Bent, Pegg, Taylor and Byrne,
Jones , and Colman, they came out in turn.
He greeted each one, just by calling their name
then proudly announced "do you fancy a game"

They took to the pitch, and the still night was broken
By leather on leather, not one word was spoken
They played once again, like they did long before
And imagined the sound of the Old Trafford roar

Edwards called out "come on lads lets pretend
That we've just scored a goal at the old Stretford End"
As they ran to the edge of the pitch by the goal
There in the stands sat a solitary soul.

His eyes were all puffy, his cheeks wet with tears
As his mind wandered back to those wonderful years
"come down and join us" they cried all as one
"yes come down and join them" said Matt "go on son"

The lonely man stood and with much pain he said
"I'm afraid I can't play with you, you are all dead.
You are all ghosts, and I am alive
That was the price that I paid to survive"

My role was to go on, inspire the team
And finally realise Matt Busbys dream
To tell of your greatness, and as I get older
To burden the weight of your life on my shoulders."

The ghost of Sir Matt then raised up his head
Giving out a loud groan, he finally said
"Bobby, You survived, that much is true
But we wouldn't be here if it were not for you

For you are the one who has kept us alive
That was the reason you had to survive
If you were with us, all we have would be gone
And the game that we play could no longer go on

If you can't understand why it happened this way
Then come here and watch when United play
They sing about us, they remember us all
We live and we breathe with each kick of the ball

The legends that live here, Robson and Best,
Cantona, Law, Giggs, Scholes and the rest
They are us, we are them, we are all here as one
And that is the reason United goes on

So come down and join us, we're begging you do
You are still one of us, and we're still one of you"
And then Bobbys face rose and he gave them a smile
And he said "I would love to come play for a while"

They played and they played, as they did in the past
Only not quite as skilful, and not quite as fast
And when it was over, and when it was done
They'd defeated Benfica by four goals to one.

Then Sir Matt said "lads, its been fun you know
But It's now Christmas day, and we really must go"
They walked to the front of the stadium and turned
And Sir Bobby said "there is something I've learned"

"You did not die, on that February night
You're still here with us, as you're with me tonight
And you'll live on forever as long as we play
As the ghosts disappeared down Sir Matt Busby way....

Man utd's woes continue with a defeat at home to Burnley. OGS days must be numbered now. Centre backs Maguire and Jones outclassed by Burnley's Mee and Tarkowski. Matic and Mata seem to be well past their best. Martial no substitute for Radford. Even De Gea gets beaten too regularly these days. Why release Lukaku then not replace him? Strange looking table now with 4 points covering 10 teams from 5th to 14th. Top 2 teams seem a lot better than the others even allowing for some inconsistency from City. I can see an improving Arsenal under Arteta moving up as United and Spurs falter. Chelsea remain inconsistent but should should hold on to 4th. At the bottom its looking bleak for Norwich and Bournemouth with 4 more teams struggling to avoid the drop. Lets hope West Ham are the team to join them.

My problem with West Ham is the favouritism shown them. Getting away with a fine after the Tevez saga that unfairly relegated Sheffield united. Being donated a (almost) free stadium by the government. Also they once beat Sunderland 8-0 and are managed by Moyes who presided over the start of Sunderland's decline. I hope we play them next year in the Championship.

Time for change   ;)    ;)    ;)

"Newcastle and Tottenham are among the top-flight clubs to furlough staff
Liverpool backtracked on their decision following fierce criticism from fans
Clubs will call upon taxpayers' money through government's job scheme
Spurs and Newcastle both have billionaire owners who could easily foot the bill
It shows they're all morally bankrupt with personal profit their only concern

Whilst Newcastle and Tottenham are rightly denigrated its not solely football clubs showing their greedy side. Virgin Atlantic and Top Shop (Branson and Green) also asking for government handouts.
