I'm sure I remember a post somewhere regading SUTH, but I can't find it.  Does anyone have any experience or info regarding this hospital off the 304?

Have been there several times. Tomorrow I go for checkup. They have an American doctor working on Tuesdays only which is very convenient in view of language. Overall good experience.

I too have been to SUT seeing Dr Ryan and it was a very positive experience.

I had a lot of questions and was given thorough explanations to everything I asked. The consultation might have lasted close to 30 minutes and never before have I been ashamed to pay a bill - 100 Bath was the charge.

To set up an appointment, simply call 044 - 223600 (Reception) and ask for an appointment with Dr Ryan. Be careful to speak very clear, otherwise they might confuse Ryan with Brian (yes, they seemingly also has a Brian there).

Allow 30 to 50 minutes ahead of the appointment for an interview if it is your first visit to SUT.

Good luck.

Regular charge in public hospitals 50 (fifty) THB per consultation (e.g. at Maharat and at Military Hospital); however sometimes charged by default even if you go there for other services, such as a blood test, without actually needing or requesting a consultation.

Have been to SUTH today. Medicines Thb 300, Laboratory test Thb 440, Docter Ryan Thb 100: total Thb 840. Arriived at the hospital around  08.10 hrs. Weight, bloodpressure etc. taken done quickly. At laboratory blood taken 08.28 hrs. Results were ready 08.48 hrs. Could go to the doctor immediately and after a relaxed talk, I can understand and asked everything, back in the car at 09.10 hrs. So maybe a bit more expensive than hospitals mentioned but also saved a lot of time. So I will continue to go to SUTH and not to Maharat or any other government or military hospital. Freedom of choice, is it not?

Have a nice day.

Robert, I just answered the Viking's remark trying to relieve his sense of embarrassment, that's all. You think I care for additional 50 THB in front of all other advantages already listed by you and other members before? Just the language factor alone is decisive for most of us: we all know how generally poor is English by Thai doctors around here; no English-speaking member of this forum with a bit of grain in his mind would criticize your choice - let alone deny your freedom of choice! I may decide to recur to that physician myself in the future. The only real disadvantage for me is distance: those other public hospitals are much closer to where I live.

I just specified bill to show costs which are reasonable in my opinion. I live close to 304 and have a car so easier for me to go to SUTH also in view of parking options. Fully agree about language, that is a BIG plus for me.

As I have never been to Maharat myself I can only state hearing from a friend who did indeed go there that docterfee is indeed Thb 50 but for Thai only. Being a foreigner he had to pay Thb 200.

To put this B50 into context, Bangkok Hospital have my records so I usually go there.
Needing pills not obtainable at my usual source, Siam Pharmacy, it took me an hour to achieve at BKK but - Patient Consultation. B150. Doctor. B350. Pills B300. Total B800.

First 2 items a pure sham. But the Nurses are pretty !

Dr Ryan is going back to the States on his yearly visit. He is expected back in Korat around July 1.

On a side note here is a "better" telephone number to SUTH: 044 - 376 555
This should be the correct number to the reception.

I read this addendum only now. I think your friend is wrong, Robert. I already used Maharat and other public hospitals as a patient myself, and every time I paid the same doctor fee as Thai people do, i.e. 50 THB. I didn't use SUTH until now.

Like I said, I have NEVER been to Maharat and only stated what a friend told me. I did not go to Maharat myself to check. Good to hear from you what correct price is for foreigners but I will stick to SUTH.

For completeness: this afternoon I was at the Military Hospital to consult an external orthopaedist about a little accident I suffered weeks ago, and it costed me more than expected: 200 THB (150 for specialist's examination + 50 for being beyond government working hours).

My appointment slip was for 17:00 but, albeit arriving 15 min. earlier, I got queue ticket no. 20 and all in all I had to wait about 1 hour before being admitted. Visit lasted 10 min, physician spoke some English (just enough) and gave me clear-cut diagnosis and prognosis in a confident way. In one month from now I will be able to tell you if he was right or wrong.

Has anybody used the Dental Services at SUT Hospital? I need to get some fillings re-done and maybe a new crown. If not, how about St Mary's as an alternative?

Hi Wizard.

I can recommend the 'Seubsiri Dental Clinic' on 360/4 Seubsiri Rd. (Coming towards the City, turn left at the lights by 'Walrus' in the direction of Tawan Dang and it's about 200 metres on your left).
I've had fillings and also an 'implant' done there. Expert work and not expensive for routine work like fillings. A Thai Lady dentist. More gentle than most Dentists too !

We've also tried the Dentist at 'Rim Living' - very good. Not busy.
I found BKK Hospital rough ! and opposite the Chaopaya Hotel - dreadful.

I hate the way they cover your face in Thailand and I always say NO to the cover.
Personally I like to see the biggers coming and going with those tools of torture LOL !

Good luck eh !

Thanks Roger! I'll give her a try. I also HATE going to dentist. I had a tooth pulled years ago by a lady dentist and she gave me the
normal dose of Novacaine for a Thai. Well, I weigh twice what a Thai weighs and while she was pulling the tooth, I almost died
with pain. I asked her why she didn't use more novacaine on me and she didn't have an answer, so question the doctors when
they are treating you!

That dentist is called Dr. Wannarat Thatsanai, nicknamed Dr. Apple. She is a kind lady, she speaks a little English (not really enough IMHO). She has been my dentist for the past 4 years but mainly for easy stuff like cleaning or small fillings. She is the one I referred to in the last paragraph of this post. The clinic's card in my possession shows 2 phone numbers: 083-7959636 and 044-353399.

Until now I was happy enough to recommend her to my friends. I even accompanied there personally 4 friends until now, all foreigners. These 4 friends were treated for different needs and, to be fair, results were mixed: not all 4 of them were 100% satisfied with treatment received. Myself I was a bit disappointed last time I went as:

(1) She wanted to remove, quickly on the spot, a broken dead tooth; she tried hard to convince me but I preferred to take my time as I didn't feel any pain at all. That was 2 months ago and now I can say I was right to wait: that broken tooth is holding well without any problem and I intend to keep it as long as possible.

(2) She did some quick cleaning on her own initiative, probably unnecessary as she had done a regular full cleaning just 3 months earlier (normally I do once a year). She worked less than 10 minutes on this quick cleaning. Yet, she charged me for it the same amount she always charges for a full cleaning: 500 THB. Now, considering also that I had just been taking 4 new customers to her in previous weeks, I think you can understand my annoyance.

Wizard, try her out for easier stuff (fillings). If you feel good with her, go ahead for the rest. If you feel you need extra anaesthetic, tell her at once. If you don't like covering your face, just tell her so. I've heard of dentists who insist covering the face of patients even against their will: I don't know if that's true, I never met one, but anyway that's not the case here, not to worry! One of my friends who was treated by her have this problem that, like Roger, he cannot stand his face to be covered: we just asked her to renounce covering the face and that's it. She is a very gentle woman indeed.

She has one more default common to many professionals here: she is not always punctual. Keep that in mind when taking an appointment: avoid being the first one in the morning; but if you have to, tell them clearly you expect the dentist to be on time.
