In Ireland this https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11533581/Christian-teacher-refused-use-gender-neutral-pronouns-remain-bars-Christmas.html

It's plain barmy - words almost fail me   >:(

Although, when you read the article, he was jailed for breaking a court order not because of his views. And he can get out any time by admitting contempt of court. He was suspended on full pay; he clearly wanted to provoke the court and he clearly couldn't care less about the mental health of the child. Religious nutjob: he's where he belongs.

Yes CK but for me it's still barmy - the Police and the Court supported his exclusion from the School on these grounds ? It's sick !

I don't think there's anything the police or courts could do: it's a civil matter presumably based on policy set by the local education authority. And I suspect the 'unwritten' part of the story (because its come from that notorious dog-whistle Daily Mail) is he has been deliberately unpleasant to a struggling child - the school would not have taken the dramatic step of getting a court order to bar him attending otherwise. Notable that none of the parents of other children supported him in court.

Hi CK. I agree this is strange - "Notable that none of the parents of other children supported him in court". But I think it quite unfair to assume that - "he has been deliberately unpleasant to a struggling child".

Whatever else, for Schools anywhere to be trying to implement this policy is barmy, sick and moreover, bloody ridiculous. IMO most find it hard to embrace this crap, (whoops, that's NOT to say you are).

But good replies thanks.

True, I can't be sure. My natural bias against religious zealots - Ireland has more than its share (particularly in the north!). Somebody must have complained about him though, and I can only assume it is the child and their parents.

Hard to believe what my eyes see  ::)  No wonder the NHS is falling apart :-

"The NHS has hired “lived experience” tsars on salaries of up to £115,000, despite ministers vowing a war on waste in the health service.

Midlands Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (MPFT) is recruiting a director for lived experience who must have experiences of a life-altering health condition and “significant power imbalances” in their use of health services.

Its tsar will “ensure brave spaces” for people to give feedback and will be based at St George’s Hospital, Stafford, on a salary of £110,000-£115,000 per year – four times that of a newly qualified nurse or junior doctor

I wonder if the tide of 'woke' is turning - we had the IMO happy demise of Chief Scots' woke monster, Ms Sturgeon, falling on her sword following the ridiculous idea that transgender male rapists should be housed in women's prisons.

Now there's this - "The World Athletics Council has voted to follow swimming and rugby rather than cycling and rowing in ruling that there can be no fair inclusion criteria for transgender athletes in elite women's sport."

What took you so long Lord Coe ?????   >:(

Sharon Davies who has long campaigned about this, in the face of much abuse, deserves much credit.

GOODBYE and good riddance to that particular modern idiocy  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Is cycling the next sport to end this nonsense   ::)

""The debate over transgender inclusion in sport has intensified after a male-born cyclist won a prestigious women's amateur race. "Tiffany Thomas, 46, a scientist who rides for the US-based professional team LA Sweat, won the Randall’s Island Criterium Race over the weekend in New York. Celebrating her victory on Instagram, Thomas wrote that she felt "like a superhero" racing in the team colours.

Thomas's victory came on the same weekend that there were online protests about the USA Cycling National Cyclocross Championships in Hartford, where transgender riders were included. Austin Killips finished third in the women’s elite race – behind Clara Honsinger and Raylyn Nuss – becoming the first transgender woman to win a medal at the event. Jenna Lingwood, another trans athlete, finished fifth.

Hannah Arensman, who was fourth, later announced her retirement from the sport. She said that it had “become increasingly discouraging” to train and then lose to someone with an “unfair advantage”

:D  It's not me who started the thread, Roger. You did, and you put the word "woke" in the title, so it must have some meaning to you. Or does it?

As for me, the only time I ever use the word "woke" is to talk about what I do after I stop sleeping: "I woke up at 5.30am this morning."

I have no idea what "wokeness" is. But I reckon you do. It seems to occupy your mind considerably.

No, I haven't seen that video, Roger. Are you in it? Which part should I skip to to find out what "woke" or "wokeness" means to you?

Alfie you are being strangely persistent.

I spot a set-up' when I see it. If YOU don't know what 'woke' means - look it up in a Dictionary. Or watch the video which I am not in of course.

My last contribution on this thread was about the transgender male athletes competing as women and for me, that is part of 'wokery'.

And that's it.

Roger, you are being strangely reluctant to give us your definition of "woke" and "wokeness". Up to you, of course, but as you started the thread I thought you'd be able to define those words easily. Seems you can't. Never mind.

The dictionary tells me the meaning of woke is exactly as I thought it was - the past of wake. But your definition does not seem to be the same.

Now "wokery" LOL. Are you making these words up as you go along? I guess you are using those to help rant about things you don't like.

Never mind, Roger. Rant away if it makes you feel happier.

Hardly a rant Alfie - crikey ! But I do admit to being absolutely delighted with the news I posted on 24th from the World Athletic Council - (I've since wondered if there are transgender men in the Women's football game - I don't know).

I think it's the right thing for athletics and a really healthy trend for all sports. I'd guess I'm not alone.

I see you have posted your EPL's ahead for a week or two. Whatever is 'afoot', I wish you well.

Just one day - all this madness going on :-

"Royal Air Force cadets can wear uniforms of either sex under diversity rules that also allow transgender boys to wear controversial chest binders. The policy – leaked to The Daily Telegraph – lists Mermaids, under statutory inquiry by the Charity Commission, as one of the external organisations that should be used for “support and advice”.

The guidance, updated in September 2022, prevents commanders in charge of cadet squadrons from informing parents that their children are transitioning unless they are given permission to do so. Cadets, who have begun transitioning, are “permitted to use facilities, such as toilets and ablutions” of the gender of their choosing, the policy also states
."

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/03/31/raf-cadets-gender-uniform-chest-binders-diversity/

"A primary school told parents their children could no longer wear the summer dress option to ensure their uniform policy was gender-neutral. Parents of children at Huttoft Primary and Nursery School, in the Lincolnshire village near Sutton on Sea, were “outraged” by the email informing them that the “option to wear a red gingham dress has now been removed from the policy”.

The email, sent on Friday afternoon and seen by the Telegraph, said: “This change has been brought in due to our pupil voice to make our Uniform Policy gender neutral
.” "

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/04/01/school-parents-dress-banned-uniform-gender-neutral/

". . . . the scope, remit, and – most disturbingly of all – the political function of schools appears to have grown dramatically. At their worst, some look to have become more like indoctrination centres – pushing green and gender ideology – than places where, when you aren’t laughing at the teachers, you learnt your times tables and the dates of the two World Wars."

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/04/01/schools-are-turning-children-into-judgmental-left-wing/

"The BBC, where Vaughan was an expert summariser on Test Match Special before being abruptly kicked off when the allegations were made against him, made no immediate announcement about how it would react now he is no longer stained with the taint of racism. His treatment contrasts starkly with that of the overpaid and overrated Gary Lineker, who because of the Godlike regard in which he is held would presumably by now have been our president had Britain been a republic. The minute outrage was expressed on Lineker’s behalf that for breaching his undertaking not to get political he was being dropped from Match of the Day, the BBC’s climbdown began."

As you might be able to tell - this stuff drives me up the wall. However did we get to this point?

And there's more :-

"Rarely did Olivia give her parents cause for concern. An above-average pupil and fond of the outdoors, she was, says her mother, 'a carefree and fairly typical little girl'. But it all changed when she started secondary school. Suddenly life was complicated. She joined as many school clubs and societies as possible, including, at the instigation of a friend, an LGBT discussion group.

In the space of months, Olivia, not her real name, solemnly announced to her parents in a series of updates that she was, first, a lesbian, then non-binary, then finally a boy. By the time she reached 14, Olivia was in the throes of despair, and – says her mother in an interview with The Mail on Sunday – threatening suicide almost daily.

Without telling her parents, the school referred the schoolgirl to NHS-funded Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services and did so under new name, meaning even her GP, not just her parents, was left in the dark. It is this practice that was highlighted last week by a damning report which concluded that child welfare in schools is in danger from 'gender identity' theory.

Teachers are letting pupils change their names and uniforms without parents or professionals being alerted. According to the Policy Exchange report, 'Self-ID' policies may mean parents discover their child has transitioned only when they receive a letter citing their new name and pronouns
." "

For what it's worth, the result of an hour sifting through a load of rubbish on the net:
There is no agreement on what exactly woke means.
The original meaning was to be"alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".
But it doesn’t actually mean anything.  The references to ‘woke’ before about 2018 were fairly straightforward; it meant ‘socially aware,’ ‘empathetic’. Then people seized hold of the word and blamed it for everything from deadly mass shootings to gender issues they didn't agree with.
The term has also been used by some conservatives as an insult against progressive values, but to be "woke" politically in the Black community means that someone is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality.
One definition of Woke is: "the belief there are systemic injustices in society and the need to address them..... what you see now with the rise of this woke ideology is an attempt to delegitimize history and national institutions, so that wokeness becomes a form of cultural Marxism.”
In the end, there is no consensus on what it means to be woke. Some have used it to attack trans and gay rights or critical race theory (whatever that is!)
Some think woke means they want to stand against people who are engaging in some type of advocacy for marginalized people.  The word is now being appropriated in ways far from its original definition.  “….so the reason we have to 'stay woke' is because people are finding very insidious ways to undercut our rights.”  In other words, people now use the term as an attack against cancel culture, political correctness and racial justice initiatives.
A new Ipsos Poll released recently found that 56% of Americans said woke means "to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices."  Yet 39% of those surveyed agreed with the definition,"to be overly politically correct and police others' words."
Am I any the wiser?  No, not much!
