For what it's worth, the result of an hour sifting through a load of rubbish on the net:
There is no agreement on what exactly woke means.
The original meaning was to be"alert to racial prejudice and discrimination".
But it doesn’t actually mean anything. The references to ‘woke’ before about 2018 were fairly straightforward; it meant ‘socially aware,’ ‘empathetic’. Then people seized hold of the word and blamed it for everything from deadly mass shootings to gender issues they didn't agree with.
The term has also been used by some conservatives as an insult against progressive values, but to be "woke" politically in the Black community means that someone is informed, educated and conscious of social injustice and racial inequality.
One definition of Woke is: "the belief there are systemic injustices in society and the need to address them..... what you see now with the rise of this woke ideology is an attempt to delegitimize history and national institutions, so that wokeness becomes a form of cultural Marxism.”
In the end, there is no consensus on what it means to be woke. Some have used it to attack trans and gay rights or critical race theory (whatever that is!)
Some think woke means they want to stand against people who are engaging in some type of advocacy for marginalized people. The word is now being appropriated in ways far from its original definition. “….so the reason we have to 'stay woke' is because people are finding very insidious ways to undercut our rights.” In other words, people now use the term as an attack against cancel culture, political correctness and racial justice initiatives.
A new Ipsos Poll released recently found that 56% of Americans said woke means "to be informed, educated on, and aware of social injustices." Yet 39% of those surveyed agreed with the definition,"to be overly politically correct and police others' words."
Am I any the wiser? No, not much!
