Frightened Asian tourists cancel flights, stay home
The South Korean government’s advisory to its citizens to delay trips to countries and territories where the Covid-19 coronavirus has been found has resulted in numerous flight cancellations to Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.

South Korea has remained relatively free of the contagion, although one of its citizens was found to be infected after returning from Thailand.

Its news media have also reported that the virus is rampant in North Korea, which shares a porous border with China.

Thai Airways this week reported a 30-per-cent plunge in its bookings for round-trip flights between Bangkok and Seoul and said it was dropping four weekly flights as a result from February 26-March 28.  nationthailand.com

Coronavirus UPDATE: WHO fights the ‘infodemic’, recession fears in Europe  February 15, 2020

The infodemic…
On top of the spread of the virus, there has been increasingly dangerous spread of what the World Health Organisation describes as an ‘infodemic’ – fake news and fuzzy maths – where people are posting all sorts of fear-mongering and random claims which are not based on science or the actual situation. Now the WHO is urging tech companies to take tougher action to battle the infodemic about the coronavirus. This week representatives from the WHO travelled to Silicon Valley (the Californian home to many of the big tech HQs) to speak directly to executives about the spread of false information.

The digital business solutions manager for the WHO, Andrew Pattison, says that false information was “spreading faster than the virus”.

“Bogus claims that the virus was spread by eating bat soup or could be cured by garlic have already swept the web.

Books on the disease, hastily cobbled together to cash in on the concerns over the outbreak, have been popping up for sale on e-retailers. But often clicking on these searches for info is met with a barrage of ads offering bogus cures, face masks and ‘vitamin C boosters’ – Vitamin C is already listed as one of the fake cures for coronavirus (or any virus for that matter).

Social media companies have already taken some steps to remove bogus claims and inaccurate fuzzy maths predictions, as well as actively promote accurate information from reputable sources.

“Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and TikTok are already directing users that search for coronavirus on their sites to the WHO or local health organisations.”

In other coronavirus news from around the world today…

• Recession fears are again in the European news after Germany’s economy flatlined at the end of 2019. The coronavirus outbreak now threatens to further dampen exports to China. The German economy showed zero growth over the final three months of 2019, setting up Europe’s largest economy for a difficult 2020, at the time it was predicted to begin experiencing positive growth.

The situation makes Europe especially vulnerable to the looming hit from the coronavirus outbreak. For the UK, recently dropped out of the EU, the situation could be even more hazardous as it tries to establish new trading partnerships.

• Yesterday it was revealed that 1,716 healthcare workers in mainland China were infected by the coronavirus, six have died. The revelations from China’s National Health Commission . Nearly 90% (87.5%) of those clinicians were from Hubei province, where Wuhan is the capital.

• A Russian woman, who escaped from a hospital quarantine ward for novel coronavirus, will now face a lawsuit filed by heath authorities for endangering the public. Alla Ilyina travelled back from China on January 31 and was under observation at the Botkin Hospital for Infection Diseases in St. Petersburg.

The woman fled the hospital without permission by “short-circuiting the electronic lock on the door to her ward”, according to St. Petersburg’s chief sanitary physician. Last Thursday was actually the end of Ilyina’s mandatory 14 day quarantine period, and her lawyer says that his client “had the right to return home”.

• China remains the ‘hotzone’ for coronavirus as we head into the 2nd half of February, about seven weeks into the outbreak. Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong have the next largest identified case loads in the world. Epidemiologists note that the growth in cases continues to be linear rather than exponential, giving them hope that there will soon be a “flattening” of the graph in cases, and deaths.

“Coronavirus cases are not rising dramatically outside China despite a statistical spike in Hubei province on one day this week”, according to a WHO spokesperson.

“The only exception was on a cruise liner docked in Japan, where 44 new cases were reported, bringing the total there to 218. There was also no major shift in the coronavirus’s pattern of mortality or severity.”

• The ‘Diamond Princess’ remains in quarantine in Yokohama Bay, Japan. Not all the 3,700 people on board have been tested yet – people confirmed with the virus are taken to hospitals on land to be treated, while those on board are largely confined to their cabins, according to APF. But Japanese health authorities are now permitting those aged 80 or over, who have tested negative for the coronavirus, to disembark.

“… but they would have to stay in accommodation provided by the government until further notice.”

Thanks for that waterheart that is good news

People over 50 most at risk of Covid-19 infection

People over 50-years old, especially those with congenital diseases, are more prone to coronavirus (Covid-19) infection, said Prof Doctor Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University.

Yong posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday (February 19) a summary of the Chinese government's study on Covid-19 from more than 72,000 infected patients in the country:

1. Most patients are between 30 and 79-years old , accounting for 90 per cent of the total

2. 80.9 per cent of patients have slight symptoms and breathe no more than 30 times per minute. Meanwhile, those who have pneumonia account for 13.8 per cent with 4.7 per cent in serious condition.

3. Of 416 patients, no children under 10-years old died, while the death rate of patients aged between 10 and 40 was 0.2 per cent, 0.4 per cent in patients aged 40-50 years, 1.3 per cent in patients aged 50-60 years, 3.6 per cent in patients aged 60-69 years, 8 per cent in patients aged 70-79 years, and 14.8 per cent in patients aged over 80 years.

4. Patients who are medical personnel were 3.8 per cent.

5. The ratio between male and female patients infected with coronavirus was 51.4 to 48.6. The death rate of male patients was 2.8 per cent, females 1.7 per cent.

6. Most of the deceased patients had other diseases, such as high blood pressure 39.7 per cent, heart disease 22.7 per cent, chronic respiratory disease 7.9 per cent, and cancer 1.5 per cent. However, patients who died from the infection with no congenital disease accounted for 32.8 per cent.

7. According to the data, there are many children and adults infected with the virus but yet to show full symptoms. They will be tested soon.

He added that China CDC Weekly on Monday (February 17) put the death rate in China at 4,584, of which 8 people or 0.08 per cent were below 30- years old and 0.3 per cent, between 30 to 50-years old .

"This disease is more dangerous to people over 50-years old , especially those suffering from congenital disease. They must take care of themselves through regular medical treatment and stay healthy," Dr Yong added.

PM orders precautionary plans to cope with Stage 3 spread of COVID-19

Thailand is currently at Stage 2, which means that it is capable of containing the virus from spreading, unlike the situation in several other countries where COVID-19 infection is more widespread. Although officials have done a good job in containing the virus, the Prime Minister said that he wants the country to be fully prepared to cope with a worsening situation.

Thailand wants nationals out of China

The Foreign Affairs Ministry’s Department of Consular Affairs has advised Thais in China to leave the country as the Covid-19 coronavirus spreads.

Noting that the outbreak has been formally recognised as an international public health emergency, it has posted on Facebook on Wednesday (February 19) the contact information for the Thai Embassy in Beijing and all Thai consulates elsewhere in China.

The department urged Thais in China to leave while airlines are still operating.

“We also ask Thais to avoid travelling to China if there is no essential need,” it said. “We ask those who live in China to monitor the situation closely and follow the authorities’ instructions to prevent infection.

Coronavirus UPDATE: S Korea tops 156 cases, Ukrainians attack evacuee bus

The total number of infected worldwide cases of coronavirus (Covid-19) stands at over 76,735. At least 2,247 people are now dead from the virus, with all but 11 of those deaths in mainland China. 18,561 people are now registered as ‘recovered’ from the virus. The fatality rate still sits around 2%.

• There has been a sharp spike in new cases of the virus in South Korea according to the country’s Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. A total of 52 new cases have been diagnosed in just one day, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 156.

Among the new cases, nearly 40 are linked to the Shincheonji Church of Jesus in the southern city of Daegu. Authorities are now attempting to test the entire congregation.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke on the phone yesterday, agreeing to share information about the two countries’ clinical treatment experiences.

President Xi told Moon that “the Chinese people has broken away from the initial fear and are seeing the prospect and hope of overcoming the infectious disease.”

• Dozens of protesters in a Ukraine town have mobbed buses carrying evacuees from coronavirus-hit China. The evacuees were being brought to a hospital in the central Poltava region, where they will be quarantine for 14 days.

Many residents fear the virus could spread through the town, which has a population of about 10,000. Earlier yesterday, 45 Ukrainians and 27 foreign nationals were flown from Wuhan in China, the epicentre of the deadly outbreak, to eastern Ukraine. Six buses then drove them to the hospital in Novi Sanzhary, where they were met by demonstrators lighting bonfires and hurling stones.

The country’s health ministry says none of the passengers were sick, whilst the Ukraine PM has issued statements trying to calm the panic in the town.

• 11 people evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship, marooned in Yokohama Bay, and flown out by US authorities on February 17, have tested positive for the novel coronavirus. 13 of the US evacuees were taken to the University of Nebraska Medical Centre for testing. All but two tested positive.

Ten of the evacuees taken to UNMC remain in a quarantine unit, while three others are in a state Bio-containment unit, according to the release.

• Meanwhile, 2 passengers from Australia, also evacuated from the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan, have been diagnosed with the coronavirus. 164 evacuees from the cruise ship arrived at the Howard Springs Quarantine Facility yesterday to begin a 14 day quarantine period.

6 passengers were identified to have minor respiratory symptoms or fevers and were moved into isolation and tested. 2 tested positive for the virus.

Australia now has 17 confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus with 11 people registered as “recovered”.

• In further scientific research, the new coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) spreads mostly through respiratory droplets and contact with infected patients. But new research suggests that it can also spread through feces.

There are currently more cases of coronavirus than would be expected if the virus were spreading only through respiratory droplets and contact with infected patients. The report was published February 15 by the Chinese Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Previous tests have found that the coronavirus can be present in faeces, but it was unclear if the virus would be ‘viable’ and able to spread to another person, according to a previous Live Science report. So, a group of researchers analysed stool samples from patients with coronavirus.

According to the Live Sciencewebsite, they isolated the coronavirus from one patient who had severe pneumonia and examined the virus under an electron microscope. They found that the coronavirus was viable.

“This means that stool samples may contaminate hands, food, water, etc. People who use the bathroom and then don’t wash their hands could spread the virus to others, for instance.”

Towards the end of this DT piece there's a World map of cases on which Thailand doesn't figure at all. I think we should be told - it's relevant to decisions such as travelling at Songkran.

Please, what is going on in Thailand ?

Thanks Hector - I missed that  ::)

As you say a gem - of course Corona virus will ease after all the Songkran mingle/bustle ! It's obvious really - why didn't I think of that  ;)

And Thailand's coming summer heat will be too much for the virus  ::)  That's obvious too and any suggestion that the heat might help promote the virus, would be crazy   ;)

(Personally I'm not in a panic about Corona but the incompetence of this Post overview is really quite shocking. I hope Thailand is not heading for a fall . . . .)

Stay well Guys   :-\

Thailand Plans to Raise Covid-19 Outbreak to 3rd Stage

The Public Health Ministry plans to raise the novel coronavirus (Covid-2019) disease outbreak in Thailand to the third stage to facilitate containment of the virus.

Deputy prime minister and public health minister, Anutin Charnvirakul said the National Infection Control Committee will meet Monday’s afternoon to consider the plan and will make an announcement after the meeting.

The meeting is also expected to list Covid-19 as a dangerous communicable disease for effective response to the disease.

The third stage refers to mass infections in a country. Meanwhile, Thailand is now in the second stage with reports of local transmission.

“Thailand’s situation has not yet reached the peak stage but we have to be prepared and stay vigilant amid concerns over possible quick spread of the disease as it occurred in South Korea,” said the public health minister.

If the disease is announced as the dangerous communicable disease, persons, who are at risk of contracting the deadly virus cannot refuse medical treatment, he added. (TNA)

IS this speculation from the west or is China not telling the truth about the source of the coronavirus?

"A new report from this weekend stated that people should not “buy China’s story” surrounding the origins of the coronavirus from China, suggesting that details may point to the virus likely coming from a Chinese biological lab."

KC that's a very credible insight . . . .

Still no real news about Corona in Thailand ?

(A Friend in Laemsing has disinfected the whole house and taken his kids out of School. That seems OTT to me.)

"The Public Health Ministry on Tuesday announced two new Thai Covid-19 cases: a woman, 31, whose relative visited Guangzhou and a male driver of Chinese tourists, 29, as the total number of local cases rose to 37."  (Bkk Post today (25th))  Now it starts, although I sincerely hope not.

Who knows Alfie ? The Chinese viral Lab close to the Wuhan market seems likely too. I guess we'll know in due course.

Meantime Matt Hancock is 'worried' and Brits returning from Italy north of Pisa are being told to self-isolate on return.1000 tourists in a Tenerife Hotel are confined - here we go  ::)

Let's hope this winds down soon . .

A colleague who recently travelled to New Zealand was given this advice by the local pharmacy (a very experienced pharmacist who knows what he is talking about):

- keep your hands very clean. Wash hands often, particularly after touching any door handles etc. when out. Use alcohol hand gel frequently.

- avoid close contact with strangers if possible. Avoid anyone who seems unwell or is coughing.

- use a mouth spray (see NHS advice). In his opinion, having your mouth and throat thoroughly coated with something that will catch and kill bacteria should be 90% more effective than anything else (if the bacteria is then swallowed your stomach acid kills it). It is making sure it doesn't get to your lungs that is critical.

- don't bother with face masks, although social pressure may play a part in this. Face masks have no effect.

But his no.1 piece of advice was to wash hands and make sure not to touch your face. In his view, some rigorous personal hygiene is the best protection at the moment.

Now there's panic in the South of Italy.

"The woman, from Bergamo, had travelled to the Sicilian capital of Palermo before her home region of Lombardy was put on lockdown following a surge in cases at the weekend. But in recent days she began showing flu-like symptoms and went to hospital where she was diagnosed. Guests of the Mercure hotel where she was staying have now been quarantined and tested for the infection. News that the infection had spread sparked panic-buying in Palermo on Tuesday as shoppers stripped supermarket shelves bare and raided pharmacies for medical supplies."

I'VE GOTTA SAY THAT THE DM AND SOCIAL MEDIA MIGHT MAKE THIS THE WORST (IN THE MIND), EPIDEMIC ON RECORD . . . . Anyway, going fishing tomorrow on my M8's boat and there'll be NO corona virus out at sea. Hopefully.  ;)

BTW my other M8 at Laem Sing, bumped into him in a deserted Tesco this morning, has his freezer stocked and 6 weeks of bottled water ready. No comment.
