Ravi Shankar, this morning (Bangkok time), heart and respiratory problems. He was 92.

"The legendary sitar player, who taught Beatle George Harrison how to play the stringed instrument and brought Indian music to the West, passed away at age 92 in the early evening in San Diego, California, near his home, according to his wife Sukanya and daughter Anoushka Shankar, who were by his side." Maurice Herzog, French climber and politician, class 1919. He was famous for having led the first expedition to conquest a peak over 8,000 m.

His personal account of the expedition was published in 1951 under the title Annapurna. According to Wikipedia it is considered "a classic of mountaineering literature and perhaps the most influential climbing book ever written".

Gerry Anderson.............I grew up with Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet, Space: 1999 and UFO and loved all of these, still do.

He was responsible for creating so much great stuff in the pre-cgi age, way ahead of his time, original and most of all, his programmes were ans still are, loved by millions.

General Norman Schwarzkopf, yesterday (this morning), aged 78, complications from pneumonia. He had been the commander of Coalition Forces during the 1990-91 Gulf War to chase Iraqi Forces away from Kuwait (known as Operation Desert Storm), and a hero for many Americans. CNN report

Rita Levi-Montalcini, Italian neurologist and Senator for Life, Nobel prize for medicine in 1986, died yesterday at the age of 103.

She was one of those scientists who do not see any contradiction between science and faith; on the contrary, she considered them as perfectly compatible with each other.

She uttered many remarkable sentences in her life, but I cannot find a dedicated Webpage in English. So I tried to dust off the scarce Italian I learned in my youth to translate this from here:

- Those who are lucky enough to have faith, they can rely on a peerless support throughout all stages of life...

- I lost some of my sight, much of my hearing. At conferences, I cannot see slide shows and cannot hear well. But I think more now than when I was 20. The body can do whatever it prefers. I am not the body: I am the mind.

- In spite of my age, I don't live in the past, but in the future!

- In life, you should never resign, surrender to mediocrity, but get out from that "grey zone" where all is routine and passive submission, you must cultivate the courage to rebel.

Mr Squiggle's Miss Pat dies,

Patricia Lovell, the movie producer behind Australian classics Gallipoli and Picnic at Hanging Rock but better known to children of the `60s and early `70s as Miss Pat from the TV show Mr Squiggle, has died aged 83.

News Ltd websites report Lovell died on Saturday from liver cancer with her children, son Simon and daughter Jenny, by her side.

Lovell began her career in radio and television and apart from Mr Squiggle also appeared in the original TV version of Beauty and the Beast.

She became the anchorwoman for the early morning Sydney Today Show in 1969, where she later met director Peter Weir who went on to direct the Australian Film Institute (AFI) award-winning films Gallipoli and Picnic at Hanging Rock.

Lovell also produced the critically-acclaimed films Break of Day and Monkey Grip.

From 1996 to 2003 she worked as Head of Producing at the Australian Film, Television and Radio School.
Lovell was awarded an MBE and Order of Australia and also received the Raymond Longford Award from the Australian Film Institute in 2004 for her work.

The Troggs lead singer Reg Presley

Troggs frontman Reg Presley has died following a battle with lung cancer, it has been reported.

The 71-year-old died at his home in Andover, Hampshire, surrounded by friends and family, close friend and music publicist Keith Altham has said.

He announced the death of his "dear old pal" on his Facebook page, adding that the 1960s rock star suffered a number of strokes recently.

He said: "He was one very real person in a sometimes very unreal world. Our thoughts are with his wife Brenda and the the family and those legion of fans who loved his music and his band. I will miss him hugely."

Presley's daughter Karen confirmed the death of her father to music website WENN.

She told the website: "He passed away peacefully at home and myself, my brother and our mother were with him. We're absolutely heartbroken."

The Wild Thing star announced to fans that he was suffering from lung cancer in January last year after being taken ill at a gig in Germany.

He said: "As you all know I was taken ill whilst doing a gig in Germany in December. During my stay in hospital tests showed that in fact I have lung cancer. I am receiving chemotherapy treatment and at the moment not feeling too bad.

"However I've had to call time on The Troggs and retire. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the cards and calls and for your love, loyalty and support over the years."

Mindy McCready, American country singer, on February 17, suicide. She was 37 and a mother of 2 young children.

She had already attempted suicide 3 times in her life. Her last boyfriend, and father of her second child, had committed suicide one month earlier, in the same place where she did (both by gunshot). A former boyfriend had tried to kill her (2005). She had been participating in the reality TV show Celebrity Rehab (2009), and is the fifth cast member to die after participating in that show (source).

StÃ©phane Hessel, yesterday. He was a German-born French diplomat, ambassador, writer, concentration camp survivor, former Resistance fighter. He was 95.

He came under the spotlight a couple of years ago for his bestselling book: Indignez-vous! (translated in many languages; in English as Time for Outrage!). The French title inspired the movement of Los Indignados, that made the news in Spain.
