RIP Bruce, you planned and executed the perfect robbery or at least it would have been if you hadn't coshed Jack Mills the train driver.

But for that you would have been right up there with Robin Hood.

A great man. RIP.

R.I.P. Kenny!

Went to see him many times in my youth at jazz clubs in the North London/Hatfield/St Albans area.

One of the best.

RICHARD GRIFFITHS

Richard Griffiths, one of Britain's most celebrated character actors, has died from complications following heart surgery.

The stage and screen star, who played Uncle Vernon Dursley in the Harry Potter films, was 65.

Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter alongside him, led tributes to the actor whose "encouragement, tutelage and humour" made work "a joy".

Radcliffe, who also performed with Griffiths in the stage play Equus, said: "Richard was by my side during two of the most important moments of my career.

"In August 2000, before official production had even begun on Potter, we filmed a shot outside the Dursleys', which was my first ever shot as Harry. I was nervous and he made me feel at ease.

"Seven years later, we embarked on Equus together. It was my first time doing a play but, terrified as I was, his encouragement, tutelage and humour made it a joy.

"In fact, any room he walked into was made twice as funny and twice as clever just by his presence. I am proud to say I knew him."

Griffiths died yesterday at the University Hospital of Coventry and Warwickshire. Sir Nicholas Hytner, director of the National Theatre, said Griffiths's unexpected death would devastate his "army of friends".

Away from the Harry Potter films, Griffiths was most famous for his role as Uncle Monty in cult favourite Withnail And I. The married actor, who was born in Thornaby-on-Tees, North Yorkshire, and grew up caring for his deaf parents, was awarded an OBE for services to drama in 2007.

His agent Simon Beresford said: "Richard was a remarkable man and one of our greatest and best-loved actors. He will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go to his devoted wife Heather and his family at this sad time."

Mike Denness, the only Scotland-born cricketer to have captained England, has died of cancer at the age of 72.

A stylish batsman who played county cricket for Kent and Essex, Denness captained England in 19 of his 28 Tests and scored 25,886 first-class runs.

Leading England in the disappointing 1974-75 Ashes tour, he famously dropped himself for the fourth Test in Sydney.

Denness, who was Kent president, was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours List four months ago.

A very sad day indeed. Leg end. What a great show, along with The Wire the best thing on TV.

Alan Whicker has died at the age of 87

Alan Whicker, best known for his travels around the globe, has died at the age of 87 in Jersey.

He died in the early hours today after suffering from bronchial pneumonia, his spokesperson said. During a distinguished TV career stretching nearly 60 years, Alan Whicker is still best remembered for his Whicker's World TV series which ran from 1959 to 1988.

Born Alan Donald Whicker in Cairo, Egypt on 2 August 1925, Alan Whicker attended Haberdashers' Aske's School in London. He served as a captain during World War II, and then a director with the Army Film and Photo Section.

His long and extremely respected career includes positions as a newspaper war correspondent in Korea, foreign correspondent, novelist, writer, radio broadcaster and TV presenter.

Among those paying tribute is actor Stephen Fry. He used his official Twitter account to say: "Sad news about Alan Whicker." Fellow broadcaster and Monty Python star Michael Palin spoke warmly of Alan Whicker: "A great character, a great traveller and an excellent reporter," he said.
