Dam - I noticed this today - thought you might be interested . . .

"Richard was special — fun, insightful, generous, with a sharp sense of humour, and a fabulous cook and sommelier. He embraced life, good and bad, and imbued those around him with the sheer excitement of what could be done, discovered, resolved and enjoyed."

Dan McCafferty, the lead singer of Nazareth died a few days ago.

Nazareth singer Dan McCafferty dies, aged 76

Dan McCafferty, one of the founding members of Scottish hard rock group Nazareth, has died at the age of 76.

Born in Dunfermline, the star was known for his raspy vocals on 70s rock classics such as Broken Down Angel, Hair Of The Dog and Love Hurts.

He remained with the band until 2014, when he developed a lung condition that made it hard to breathe and was forced to retire.

His death was confirmed by Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew. No cause was given.

The lead guitarist, Manny Charlton, died earlier this year, in July, aged 80.

They had some great songs. Here are three of my favourites.

George Cohen - God love him  :)   I was at Fulham at the East end by the Cottage, after '66, as I remember, when he broke his leg around the half way line - we could hear it. What a great Guy and a World Cup winner to boot. R.I.P.

All a long time ago.

"Announcing his death, Fulham said that they were “desperately saddened to learn of the passing of one of our greatest ever players – and gentlemen – George Cohen MBE” and recalled how he made his debut for the club aged 17 in 1957 after working on the club’s ground-staff.

“Blessed with terrific pace, he became one of the game’s first attacking full-backs, setting the tone for how football is so often played today,” said the Fulham statement."

I agree with that   ;)

"Gina Lollobrigida, who has died aged 95, was the first Italian film actress to gain a reputation as a post-war international sex symbol; with her ample charms and expression of smouldering disdain she gained instant popularity after her 1949 screen debut in Miss Italy; she soon earned the various sobriquets “La Lollo”, the “temptress of the Tiber”, the “Italian Jayne Mansfield” and, in her own country, the busto provocante, a reflection of the impact of her 35-22-36 figure.

Gina Lollobrigida was extremely hard-working and appeared in scores of films. She was keen to co-operate with directors and would often memorise scripts fully in advance. But in spite of her professionalism she was said to lack screen presence.

This may in part have been due to her practicality. Efficient competence left little room for the vulnerability or fiery intensity that characterises many true heroines.

But with the help of her Yugoslavian-born husband and manager, Milko Skofic, she was aggressive in marketing her talents. Howard Hughes was said to have “discovered” her after seeing provocative pictures of her, bikini-clad, which her husband had allowed to be placed in a magazine."

"Raquel Welch, who has died aged 82, was a reluctant film sex symbol of the 1960s and 1970s, and half a century after being launched as “the world’s next sex missile” was still voted the big screen’s second sexiest woman ever, after Jennifer Aniston.

For an actress who could not really act, and one with a famously fiery temper to boot, she enjoyed a remarkably enduring career, even if it declined into a succession of unmemorable roles on television."

"Betty Boothroyd, the first female Speaker of the House of Commons, has died at the age of 93.

The crossbench peer broke 700 years of tradition when she was elected the first woman Speaker in the spring of 1992.

She died at Addenbrookes Hospital in Cambridge on Sunday.

Renowned for her unwavering sense of fairplay, unshakeable self of humour and passionate belief in the sovereignty of Parliament, Baroness Boothroyd’s term of office coincided with John Major's attempts to defend his slim majority.

She was in the Speaker’s chair during the extensive parliamentary wrangling over the Maastricht Treaty, had to navigate the sleaze scandals that beset the Major government and witnessed Tony Blair’s meteoric rise in 1997

God bless Betty R.I.P.

R.I.P. Paul O'Grady and Barry Humphries.

I'm not into drag at all but it's clear Paul was well loved and Edna - she was the Gal ! I loved the way Barry Humphries played the part of Edna and Les Patterson - both genuinely funny in lots of ways.

Sad losses

I hardly remember Gordon Lightfoot but this song is etched in my memory https://youtu.be/DK--A-IaZnA

"Gordon Lightfoot was a straightforward, likeable man, not keen on fame; he hated giving interviews and having his picture taken, and thought of himself as a songwriter more than a performer."

I can remember when I was working  in Thunder bay Ontario and we crossed Lake Superior, 12 months after Lightfoot released his song and the skipper kept on playing the song over & over until one of us turfed his cassette player into the lake!
