Since returning back to the LOS after my past time back in the UK, things have not gone as well as expected . First there have been two deaths in the family , then I was in a motorcycle accident , then after experiencing problems getting to sleep at bed time I was diagnosed with some thing called Sleep Apnea. Its been a bit of a rollercoaster ride to say the least . Ive not been feeling my self ( dirty habit any way ) and lost interest in many things. Ive decided its time to make an effort , so I thought I would start posting a few things and see how it goes .

Hi and many thanks for your comment , its appreciated . Ive now got my fingers firmly crossed that my luck will change for the better. Being diagnosed with Sleep Apnea has knocked me back a bit , but I'm not one to give in easily .This getting old is a curse.

Hi Ken - good luck with the apnea - I have no trouble getting to sleep thanks to the odd bottle of Beer Chang but I do wake several times in the night. If then I can't sleep again, I find a few minutes of Radio 4 does the trick.

Getting older ain't a curse - it's better than the alternative . . . . .

Good to see you back. ATB

Hi Rodger , thanks for the welcome.

Due to the drugs I'm currently taking ( high Cholesterol ) the doctor said don't drink alcohol , Love the Radio 4 trick .  I now have to sleep at night time wearing a face mask connected to a sleep apnea machine ( see photograph Link ) Currently I'm managing to get around 4 - 5 hours of sleep per night . When I think about it and all my friends both here in Thailand and back in the UK who have not managed to reach my age ( 74 ) I suppose I'm lucky to still be alive and kicking . Now when I look in the bath room mirror , all I see looking back at me is my dear old departed dad and his wrinkled old face .

I did not think that old age would come this fast .

Ken

Welcome back. I used to suffer from sleep Apnea. I basically lost weight. An ex told me she thought I had died in the night, as I didnt breath for about 10 seconds. Off to see the doc, then the hospital, checked oxygen levels were okay, then gave me a machine to check my sleeping pattern which confirmed I had the problem. It wasn't bad, hence the weight diagnosis.

It intrigued back in 2000 when I was hospitalised here for 6 weeks, and wired up to a machine for most of that duration, that there were no alarms, beeps or what have you's, so I guess it had gone!

Thanks for the welcome , The hospital doctor did mention loosing weight as a way to improve my sleep apnea symptoms . If you don't mind Just out of curiosity why were you in hospital for 6 weeks

I had a leg infection that went bad. I was actually in hospital being treated when it went rogue. They cut out the dead and infected skin and, then stuck it into a vacuum machine that reduces the risk of further infection, as well as draining away all the gunk from the op. Basically everything remained exposed until it healed sufficiently for a 2nd op, which was a skin graft, taken from my thigh.

In the words of my dear old dad just after the court judge sentenced him to a long stretch in clink , Bugger.

Now you have me wondering how you managed to get a leg infection ?

It started as cellulitis. When I went to see my Doc he said I needed to be admitted for treatement.

But on the 3rd day, after being helped to the shower, it suddenly turned to this, and I was operated on within a few hours.

That looks nasty caller. I remember reading that one of the hidden dangers of Thailand (and elsewhere tropical) is infection: even the smallest cut has the potential to become much worse. Why I'd never walk around a city in flipflops or sandals.

I still do! But I am just ultra careful. On saying that, that's only when we know where we are going and using the car. If walking in Bangkok without the car, I always wear skechers or something of that lik. I do check the area where the skin graft is everyday, as there are no nerves there to let me know there is a problem!

By the way, I don't know where that last photo came from. But I can't get rid of it.

I had to look up ….. Cellulitis

[ Cellulitis is caused when bacteria, most commonly streptococcus and staphylococcus, enter through a crack or break in the skin. The incidence of a more serious staphylococcus infection called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is increasing.

Cellulitis can occur anywhere on the body, but the most common location is the lower leg. Bacteria are most likely to enter broken, dry, flaky or swollen skin, such as through a recent surgical site, cuts, puncture wounds, ulcers, athlete's foot or dermatitis.]

Over the yers in Thailand Ive had many small cuts on my skin , and just dabbed some betadine liquid on the cut and thought every thing would be ok , Just goes to show how the smallest cut can turn into a real big problem.

Caller that looks awful - I trust you got the fullest recovery.

Ken - Hope you are feeling good today. Staying with an old Friend a couple of nights, there was no Marmite for my morning toast   >:(  So I picked up a jar of Bovril - maybe had 6 teaspoons on my toast over 2 breakfasts . .

When I left she said I should take the Bovril as she didn't use it. On arriving home, I searched for the BB date - a slight shock - JUNE 1998  ::)  Maybe it was manufactured 1995 ?  Uuuuugh  ::)

No adverse events reported yet but it is in the bin now !!!

I rang my 83 year old Pal and she recalled she had the Bovril when she last moved - 22 years ago.
