Thailand has many low lying regions around it's coastline - this is close to Bangkok . . . .

"From the corridor of Khun Samut school, it’s clear how far inwards the sea has crept. In the distance, beyond the still waters of neighbouring shrimp farms, sticks can be seen poking out of the blue. They were once electricity poles, powering the parts of the village that have since been submerged in the Bay of Bangkok.

Over recent decades, Ban Khun Samut Chin, a coastal village in Thailand’s Samut Prakan province, about 10km from the outskirts of Bangkok, has been slowly swallowed by the sea. The school, which is elevated on concrete stilts, has already been forced to retreat twice. Families have repeatedly moved their homes. Many have left altogether after finding work elsewhere. The population is getting smaller and smaller

Yes I saw that.  When I lived in the Hua Hin area 2003 -2013 we used to go down to the Samuk Prakan area  and I remember this place which was then part of a 'dry' shoreline which was thick with mangrove swamps.  During those 10 years the shrimp farms proliferated at an astonishing rate at the expense of these mangrove swamps and while the sea level is undoubtedly rising, the encroachment of the sea has definitely been accelerated by the loss of the mangroves.  Shrimp farmers will no doubt cry foul and berate the government as they lose their livelihoods, when they have been largely to blame.

There's many low lying areas on Thailand's coastline - I think of those salt harvesting regions from the Petchaburi area around the coast to BKK and also the coastline in Chantaburi province. 'We' are going to have to live with it.

Bangladesh is often mentioned as a major concern and Kolkatta also figures in Eagle's link . . . .
