Thanks Tiggs - saw something about this on "TNT' - (mainly about 'Elite' visas).

Pattaya News conclusion made me chuckle - "Concerns are already being raised about “the baby being thrown out with the bath water”. Most Thai retirees are elderly men 65-90-plus with no interest in joining a foreign mafia or even boarding a motorbike. Except perhaps to go to the pub."

We'll have to keep an eye on this  ::)

Cop complains about tattooed bikers breaking the law and ineffective immigration officers and dodgy dealings, and comes to the conclusion that the financial requirements for all retirees should be increased. I can't say I get the link that he seems to have made between his proposal and the issues he has described.

Ideally Thailand would take time and consider a thoughtful, creative, humane approach to immigration that would balance the desire to be a progressive economy with a need to consider the long term goals of the country. Keeping out criminal elements will always be a problem for a country with a population of 65m+. The Chinese mafia are a MUCH greater threat - more money, more motivation, more tactic support from 'home' to be a destabilising influence in a Western-leaning country. But easier to mention biker gangs it seems...!

Yes, I suspect there will be a lot of hot air over this topic from the farang community.  800,000 Baht (c.£20,000 quid or $24,000) is not peanuts especially when one can only actually use half the 800K!  They might raise the amount but the monthly amount will also have to rise and I think that might affect pensioners more than a rise in the lump sum.  Of course, the corollary to all this is that the genuine 'western' retiree will be prompted to leave and the less desirables (biker gangs?!) will remain.  Another self-fired shot in the Immigration foot!  If there is a genuine police plan to sort of the retiree rules, they only have to look at the sheer numbers who use agents.  But they won't touch them I suspect, because they are the geese that lay a lot of golden eggs in the immigration nest!  Having said that, if I used an agent (which I don't) I think I might be tempted not to do so in future.

I've long been bemused by this scam - it's amazing, if not astonishing, that it has gone on, for decades.

However, I watch with interest and hope it remains untouched . . . .
