Estimates from 'leading Thai officials' are for a daily average of about 25,000 deaths in road accidents - 68 per day - this figure includes all deaths from accidents i.e. not just those at the scene.

Apparently up to 80% of accidents involve motorcycles, which will not be a surprise to anyone - local motorbike riders are a nightmare. I'd guess that most accidents occur on urban and country roads, rather than the main roads particularly busy at times such as Songkran.
I'll be bold and venture that, except around BKK, I invariably find the driving on major routes to be pretty good and lorry drivers helpful on difficult mountain roads.
So that said - is it 7 days of average 'hell' ?
