Estimates from 'leading Thai officials' are for a daily average of about 25,000 deaths in road accidents  - 68 per day - this figure includes all deaths from accidents i.e. not just those at the scene.

Reports for Day 1 and Day 2 of Songkran suggest at the scene figures of 20 and 30 deaths - might this suggest that the toll at Songkran might be no worse than the usual terrible daily average   ???

Apparently up to 80% of accidents involve motorcycles, which will not be a surprise to anyone - local motorbike riders are a nightmare. I'd guess that most accidents occur on urban and country roads, rather than the main roads particularly busy at times such as Songkran.

I'll be bold and venture that, except around BKK, I invariably find the driving on major routes to be pretty good and lorry drivers helpful on difficult mountain roads.

So that said - is it 7 days of average 'hell' ?   ;)

On Day 3, 54 deaths, total now 110.

86% of accidents involved motorcycles, 7% trucks and 3% cars . .

The '7 days of hell' - IMO not a reality, just a PR opportunity - no more than that. And of course, why not indeed ?

This years Songkran week recorded 277 deaths in total - an average of less than 40.

(Appalling that 86% of these accidents recorded as 'caused by motorbikes' . . . . )

We just don't know how many die in Hospital off the scene of the accident so it's hard to be sure. But unlikely (?) that Songkran days are any worse than other days.
