Hey there everyone, like the proverbial "bad penny, I'm back!! Actually got back to the village about a month ago but have been keeping a low profile and just lurking around the various forums.

Anyhoo, hope everybody is keeping well and safe. Now to my reason for my first post since my return. No surprise really as the post heading kind of gives it away.

Yes, it's been almost a year since I bought the new car. I know that because the nice people at Korat Toyota have sent me a reminder that my insurance needs to be renewed. Obviously,  first class insurance for the first year was included with the purchase price when I bought the vehicle so I had no idea what sort of cost I would be looking at for renewal. I've been quoted 18,000 B !!!! To me that sounds rather steep but I really have no idea of vehicle insurance costs over here.

A quick reminder; it's a Hilux Reevo, 4 door, 2wd pick up.

Would anybody have any idea whether that is a reasonable cost for renewal or. indeed where does everybody else insure their motors - do they have brokers the same as in the UK. Yep, been coming to Thailand since 2008 and I'm still posting "Noob" questions LOL - hoping for some pointers / guidance.

Oh. also, what do we do about the road tax thingy that's on the windscreen. Assume that needs replacing at the same time???

As always, TIA for any thoughts / assistance. Cheers  Al

Hi Al - in the exact same situation 10 years ago, I paid B18,000 for insurance of my 'Vigo'. The premium came down progressively each year as the vehicle got older to about B11.000.

'Aioi' was the 'Toyota care' insurer and I stayed with them 8 years or so. When they refused to pay a claim for a broken windscreen, (caused by a monkey falling from a tree), I changed to 'MSIG', who I believe are a subsidiary of Aioi anyway - my last premium was just under B10,000 which seems reasonable to me. MSIG give a good service too IMO.

The road tax 'thingy' - my truck has to be 'MOT'd' these days  8) but it's a simple matter and I usually proceed from the MOT base to the tax office.

NB in the past, the tax disc was usually examined by the Police at road checks after they've looked at your licence.

Sounds about right. I just paid for the 2nd year on my CX30 and was 23,000 baht. I think they go by the value of the vehicle. New my CX30 was 1.1 million baht.

Agreed I'd think that's about right, though it doesn't harm to shop around, you'll most likely find you could save a little.
We use Direct Asia, you can pay monthly at no extra cost by direct debit, they also give a discount of 1000baht if you have a dash cam.

Excellent replies as always from this esteemed forum! TBH - now that I know the 18K figure is "in the ball park",  I will probably just go with the flow. It's just that I genuinely, had no idea what was reasonable to expect.

Many thanks for all the input. Much appreciated.

Al

ps - Roger - a monkey falling out of a tree??? Oh well. TiT I guess LOL

Annual Renewal with MSIG on my 11 year old Toyota Vigo - THB 10,600. Before renewal this April I asked for thoughts elsewhere and ROOJAI were suggested.

Fully Comp and including Govt. insurance, I chose a THB10,000 excess - (if I have an accident, 200 quid is the least of my problems).

ROOJAI insured value was THB 310,000 compared to MSIG THB 200,000 and some of the other values were much higher too. ROOJAI premium THB 6,400

That's a crackin' saving for me  :)

The English spoken on line was superb and the service charming - when I rang back the same person picked the phone up. Had to download an 'APP' and survey the car under instruction - job done. I'm delighted with it and the pack of papers arrived 2 days later.

Worth a whirl for me. ATB

How much was the excess with MSIG (for the 10,600 renewal), Roger?

Hello Alfie, the MSIG excess was THB 3,000

Some other points :-

Bodily injury - UP from THB 500K per person to THB 1,000,000 (over the limit of the compulsory insurance)

Property damage - UP from THB 2.5 million to THB 5.0 million

Own damage and fire and theft - UP from THB 200K to THB 310K (that's massive).

MedX for up to 5 persons - UP from THB 100K to THB 200K each

Also it's worth using Roojai just to talk to 'Supanita'   ;) ;)  ATB

Roger you mentioned on 11 Apr that you had re-insured your car with with Roojai at a substantial saving.  I did the same thing yesterday for my 2018 Honda Civic having been quoted a 22,500 Baht renewal from Thaivivat (Honda's tame insurance guys)  - no claims BTW.  My price with Roojai fully comp' including compulsory insurance was 9,750.  Unlike you I found the process being completely on line a bit frustrating, although the inspection guy was brilliant.  My question to you is that you said in your 11 Apr note that you received a pack of docs from Roojai a few days later.  Either things have changed or I have missed something as they sent all my papers (7 attachments) to me on line.  I hope that the transport office accepts the Por Lor Bor (Compulsory Ins') on line version for the car sticker.   Still, for 11,000 Baht saving I'll put up with more hassle willingly!

Hi Hector. I should give them a ring and ask for them to send the hard copies. That's definitely how I got mine, They said it would be 7 days and I got them in 2   ;D

That was a great saving - well done !

Renewal time with Roojai - price now, including roadside assistance is B5,964 - car valued at B224K. Even so, good value and good cover IMO.

The renewal was even easier than the first deal . . . . . and no video needed.

Watch out, the roadside assistance dropped off my renewal so I called to reinstate - B300.

One delighted Customer here - I don't read anything bad about Roojai . . . .
