For those of you who missed it, former Thailand prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra finally returned to Thailand (August 22).

The Supreme Court Tuesday jailed ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra for eight years, as he returned to Thailand after 15 years in exile..

The sentence relates to three convictions passed on him in absentia, the court said in a statement.

After 15 years of living in exile abroad, except for a brief visit to Thailand in 2008, Thaksin finally arrived at Don Mueang airport this morning at 9am.


Thaksin submits application for royal clemency 31 August 2023
Convicted former prime minister Ex-PM Thaksin Shinawatra, who recently began serving an 8-year prison term and is currently receiving medical treatment in the Police General Hospital in Bangkok, has already submitted a petition for royal clemency.

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam said today (Thursday) that he has already received the request and will examine the details before forwarding it to the prime minister.

Wissanu added that he does not know if it will be handled by this administration or the next. Procedurally, a prime minister will forward such petitions to the King

Thaksin granted royal commutation 1 September 2023
HM the King has granted a Royal commutation, reducing the prison term to be served by convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra from eight years to one.

The commutation was announced in the Royal Gazette issued on August 31st and was countersigned by outgoing Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.

The Royal clemency was granted to Thaksin, who is now receiving medical treatment at the Police General Hospital, nine days after his return to Thailand
