Spanish golf great Seve Ballasteros, who has been suffering from a brain tumour, dies at the age of 54

Spanish golf legend Seve Ballesteros has died after a protracted battle with cancer.

The 54-year-old passed away surrounded by his family at his home in Pedrena, northern Spain, in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Ballesteros was diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2008 after losing consciousness at Madrid Airport.

The five-time major winner had four operations to remove the tumour as well as undergoing chemotherapy.

In a statement, the Ballesteros family expressed gratitude for the "support and gestures of love" it had received and asked for "respect and privacy at such a painful time."

Ballesteros, who claimed 87 titles over his career, won the Open in 1979, 1984 and 1988 and became the first European to win the Augusta Masters in 1980, repeating the feat in 1983.

He also enjoyed a successful Ryder Cup career as both player and captain - playing in eight Ryder Cups and winning 20 points from 37 matches before guiding Europe to victory over the United States as a non-playing captain at Valderrama in 1997.

But it was his daring and flamboyant style that made Ballesteros special, transforming the image of golf and bringing a whole new audience to the sport.

BBC golf correspondent Iain Carter said: "No golfer did more to popularise the game in Europe than Seve Ballesteros.

"He played a fearless, exciting and charismatic brand of the game. It thrilled sport fans all over the world."

Tennis star Rafael Nadal described Ballesteros as a "reference point" for Spanish athletes.

"He's one of the greats of this country without a doubt," he said.

Ballesteros sprang to prominence as a 19-year-old, finishing second to Johnny Miller at the 1976 Open and becoming the youngest winner of the Claret Jug three years later.

His final round of 70 featured an astonishing recovery shot from a car park to set up a birdie at the 16th hole.

He became the youngest winner of the Masters at the age of 23 in 1980 and made his Ryder Cup debut later that year.

Ballesteros topped golf's world ranking for 61 weeks between 1986 and 1989 and won the World Match Play Championship five times, equalling Gary Player's record.

With his game starting to decline because of back problems, Ballesteros won the last of his record 50 European Tour titles in 1995.

And although he continued playing intermittently until 2007, he was generally a pale imitation of his former self and rarely featured on leaderboards.

Ballesteros appeared in public for the first time following the surgery in May 2009 when he went to watch his local football team Racing Santander and was given a standing ovation.

He had called his battle against the tumour the "hardest challenge of my life."

Peter Falk, Columbo actor, dies aged 83

Actor, who had been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease, died at his Beverly Hills home

Saturday 25 June 2011

Peter Falk, the American actor famous for his role in the TV detective series Columbo, has died at the age of 83.

Falk died peacefully at his Beverly Hills home on Thursday evening, said a family friend, Larry Larson. Falk had reportedly been suffering from dementia and Alzheimer's disease.

Perhaps one of US television's most popular detectives, Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in Columbo, which ran from 1971 until 2003, and one for his role in the TV drama The Price of Tomatoes. He received Oscar nominations for Murder, Inc, his breakthrough film role, in 1960, and the comedy-drama Pocketful of Miracles, a year later. Falk also starred in the films The Princess Bride, It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; Robin and the Seven Hoods, The Great Race, and The Cheap Detective.

Born in New York in 1927 to a shop owner, the actor began his career on the stage and appeared in community theatre and Broadway productions before moving to Hollywood. His Broadway debut was in Diary of a Scoundrel in 1956.

Columbo began screening as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie series during the 1970s. The character became identified with his shabby raincoat and his killer catchphrase: "One more thing …"

As a child, Falk's right eye was surgically removed because of a tumour, and was replaced with a glass eye. When starting his career in New York, an agent told the star: "Of course, you won't be able to work in movies or TV, because of your eye." And after failing a screen test at Columbia Pictures, Falk was told by studio boss Harry Cohn that "for the same price I can get an actor with two eyes".

But Falk's handicap became Columbo's trademark and enhanced the detective's image as a dishevelled and oddball crime sleuth. Falk once likened his famous character's untidy appearance to a "flood victim". "You feel sorry for him," he said. "He appears to be seeing nothing, but he's seeing everything. Underneath his dishevelment, a good mind is at work." On another occasion he described him as "an ass-backwards Sherlock Holmes".

Falk last appeared in the feature film American Cowslip in 2009.

Me too. I loved it when he'd say "There's just one more thing."  :)

Smokin' Joe died of liver cancer. Did the fight game result in him turning to drink after hanging up the gloves?

Hope that he is enjoying a gold run. I used to enjoy the programme, Blockbusters, that is, not "Blackbusters" as Mr Ed posted on his website, the pillock.  ;D

This is probably mainly for the Brits.Frank Carson was an excellent comedian

Fans of Frank Carson have been given chance to pay a personal tribute when his coffin was put on display in his local church.

A short private reception was held for the comedian's family when his coffin arrived at St Kentigern's Roman Catholic Church in Blackpool, Lancashire.

Carson, who died on Wednesday at the age of 85 after a long battle with stomach cancer, was a parishioner and lived nearby.

His coffin was placed on public display inside St Kentigern's after the family reception and was set to remain throughout the day.

Carson will be buried in his native Belfast next Saturday.

A Requiem Mass will be held in St Patrick's Church, where he married his wife Ruth more than 60 years ago.

But Blackpool was his adopted home, and fans have been leaving floral tributes to the veteran stand-up comic on the town's Comedy Carpet.

One of Carson's catchphrases - "It's the way I tell 'em" - is immortalised in the visitor attraction on the resort's promenade.

Carson died peacefully at home surrounded by his family.

In the wake of his death, his son, Tony, said it was only right that he should be buried in Belfast.

It was indeed the way he told them

RIP  Frank Carson

I missed this news completely, obviously not major enough for the Beebs news page, so thank you for mentioning it. As Toddy said never crude and never needed to swear, just a funny guy. R.I.P. Frank Carson.
If at first you don't succeed you are clearly not cut out for it. Give up and move on.

The French "God of free climbing" Patrick Edlinger died in his home on November 16, aged 52.

Circumstances of death are still unknown. It seems that he was suffering from alcoholism.

Among other things, he had been the protagonist of a 1986 National Geographic documentary that is available on Youtube (in French):

people of "star" status always seem to get some form of recognition when they stub a toe, have a mild cold or die but the "real" people, who in many cases, give more to the public are ignored. journalistic sensationalism.

Dave Brubeck, American pianist and composer of jazz, classical and sacred music, died yesterday of heart failure. He was over 90. One of his best remembered tunes is that of Blue rondo à la turk, from The Dave Brubeck Quartet's album "Time out" (1959):
