Crunchy Crickets? Candied Bugs Going Mainstream In Australia
by Toshiba Reynolds
Australian aborigines have been feasting on bugs for centuries, much to the dismay of many so-called foodies. But now insects are becoming a mainstream culinary trend, in particular the snack known as 'crunchy crickets'.
The crickets are baked to slow perfection, and once crunchy, dipped in chocolate and left to harden. How could something so simple taste so.. good?
Delectable bug delights, say purveyors, should be treated almost like any meat or protein; and bugs can be ground up, roasted and shipped to order.
This past Father's Day, one shop sold gift packs that included chocolate-covered bugs, insect lollipops, and chocolate chip mealworm cookies. Check out their website - and why not give the 'Insect Lovers Trial Pack' a go??
And if the idea of a crunchy cricket with your afternoon tea or coffee is just too delicious to pass up, check out this website - where you can even get GIANT fried crickets! Yum.
Chocolate covered bugs have long been a funky little treat, with chocolate-covered ants long considered the number choice of candied bug lovers.
Go here to find a chocolate chip mealworm cookie recipe! Ugh.
