I recently had a meal in a farang owned restaraunt in Korat. My wife ordered mushroom soup to start and a Thai main course. I ordered a mushroom soup. a steak and a spinach lasagne to share.

First up was the Thai main course. Just as my wife had finished that the lasagne arrived. I asked for another plate and we shared that. Next to arrive was my steak, quickly followed by two soups.

The food was very very good, but please, why can't a starter be a starter and a main course be a main course?

Surely if the Thai cooks can cook farang food really well they should be able to get them served in the right order.

Hi Dutchy
I don't know about that particular restaurant but I have noticed in my experiences in Thailand makes that sometimes the first food cooked by the chef/cook is the first item ordered / written down by the waiting staff so if I/you/we order steak, soup and lasagna, that's the order the cook will make them. Another way seems to be.  whatever is made the quickest. Something that takes 5 minutes to make will come first. Something taking 20 minutes to make will come later. That's just my observations and might not be the issue in the restaurant you went to (wherever that might be).

Plain stupid?? Perhaps a bit strong. Do Thais not have common sense? Still a bit strong? Just a lack of knowledge?

What annoys me is when you specifically request ABC and they give you XYZ. Bugger.

I've been to restaurants where the dishes I ordered didn't come at all! Turned that my dishes were no longer available but nobody told us.

Dutchy, I think I know the Restaurant. Very good food, great steaks but, even though it's farang owned ,the soup and garlic bread follows on. I stress exactly what I want first and still......Now I simply order starters wait til it arrives and order again. Its the only way but it's a bugger. :)

Who was the first person to say bugger on this website,by the way.

that's a great idea actually.. to order the starters and then wait until it comes to order the rest.
but with the service at most places, that would take about 3 hours to receive all the food ;)

starters coming in the middle of a meal or at the end of your main course is, i agree, extremely annoying.

But it does get worse...

1
Ordering food with rice for 6 people.
2
Food arrives and you wait while food gets cold, asking for rice again, "yes sure" the water replies.
3
Rice does not arrive and you then start picking at the food and ask again for rice.
4
Again rice does not arrive, now you get desperate as you see all the other vultures at the table gathering speed at demolishing the food, you eat quicker and frantically ask for rice again.
5
Still no rice arrival. The vultures are now picking away at a furious pace and food that was meant to be eaten with rice to slow down its dissapearing act is vanishing faster than Houdini. You frantically ask for rice again in an agitated voice.
6
The food is now all gone, everyone is still hungry and now annoyed. We cancel the rice and demand the bill.
The bill arrives with a charge for rice on it, as we start to complain that we had no rice (principle here not cost...) the rice arrives, the waiter then gladly exclaims, the rice is here now!!! and smiles broadly assuming problem solved. (true story)

Has anyone else noticed the rice nearly always comes late? is it some ploy so that you will eat the more expensive part of the meal first and order more?

KC, spot on, this has happened to me twice in the last two weeks at seperate restaurants. The rice appeared after we had eaten over half of the meals. Also the annoying smile when you complain.

I hate that too. Do they just wait until they run out of cooked rice before making more?
