I believe that when you meet a gay person, you should distinguish the fact of being gay from the fact of making a lobby. Because no lobby is good. That's the point. If a person is gay and is looking for the Lord and has goodwill, who am I to judge that person? Catechism of the Catholic Church explains it so nicely. It says that these persons shouldn't be marginalized because of that. They should be integrated in society. Having this leaning is not the problem, no! We must be brothers, because this is one but there's another one and another and another. The problem is lobbying: for this leaning, or for business, political lobbies, Freemasons' lobbies, so many lobbies you see? This is the worst problem for me. And I thank you so much for asking this question. Thank you very much.

Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee; "Which are you?"

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.

Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they got soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it.

After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled, as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked. "What's the point, grandmother?"

Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity--boiling water--but each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her granddaughter.

"When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?

Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level?

And this must start from within, from the consciences, and from there restore, restore the behaviors, the relationships, the choices, the social fabric, so that justice may flourish, may spread, may take root, and may replace iniquity

Speaking of the sanctions, they are not just a knee-jerk reaction on behalf of the United States or its allies to our position regarding the events and the coup in Ukraine, or even the so-called Crimean Spring. I’m sure that if these events had never happened (...) they would have come up with some other excuse to try to contain Russia’s growing capabilities, affect our country in some way, or even take advantage of it.

[Guantanamo] is not a prison but rather a kidnapping den because a prison is supposed to be subject to some rule of law, to the presence of prosecutors, to decisions by judges, whatever they may be, and to a minimum of legal references. But over there there's nothing of the kind. (...) Once there is a president of the United States who wants to undo a miserable injustice that they left for him, it would be cowardly to turn your back on him.

From Dick Marty (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Marty)'s interview to the Swiss national TV on occasion of the release of the US Senate Intelligence Committee report on CIA torture (source (http://www.rts.ch/info/monde/6374144-les-pays-europeens-se-sont-engages-a-accorder-l-immunite-totale-a-la-cia.html)).

I think we should recall, it is very important, that this operation, this anti-terrorism policy, was decided and carried out under the cloak of NATO. The United States had invoked article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which article 5 says that if a member of the alliance is attacked militarily, the other members are required to assist. But as soon as the application of article 5 was accepted, there has been a series of secret agreements between the United States and European countries. And all the European countries have pledged to grant total immunity to CIA agents, which is manifestly unlawful.

Pierre, a brave French fighter pilot, takes his girlfriend, Marie, out for a pleasant little picnic by the River Seine. It's a beautiful day, and love is in the air. Marie leans over to Pierre and says: "Pierre, kiss me!"

Our hero grabs a bottle of Merlot wine and splashes it on Marie's lips. "What are you doing, Pierre?", says the startled Marie.

"I am Pierre the fighter pilot! When I have red meat, I have red wine!" She smiles and they start kissing. When things began to heat up a little, Marie says, "Pierre, kiss me lower."

Our hero tears her blouse open, grabs a bottle of Chardonnay and starts pouring it all over her breasts. "Pierre! What are you doing?", asks the bewildered Marie.

"I am Pierre the fighter pilot! When I have white meat, I have white wine!"

They resume their passionate interlude and things really steam up. Marie leans close to his ear and whispers, "Pierre, kiss me lower!"

Our hero rips off her underwear, grabs a bottle of Cognac and pours it in her lap. He then strikes a match and lights it on fire. Marie shrieks and dives into the river. Standing waist deep in the water, Marie throws her arms upwards and screams furiously, "PIERRE, WHAT IN THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?"

Our hero stands up defiantly and says, "I am Pierre the fighter pilot! If I go down, I go down in flames!"

Many of the individuals and organizations we will describe today were entrusted with keeping soccer open and accessible to all. They held important responsibilities at every level, from building soccer fields for children in developing countries, to organizing the World Cup. They were expected to uphold the rules that keep soccer honest and to protect the integrity of the game. Instead, they corrupted the business of worldwide soccer to serve their interests and to enrich themselves. (...)

The fourteen defendants charged with indictment we are unsealing today include high-ranking officials of FIFA (...), leaders of regional and other governing bodies under the FIFA umbrella, and sports marketing executives who, according to the indictment, paid millions of dollars in bribes and kickbacks to obtain lucrative media and marketing rights to international soccer tournaments. The 47-count indictment against these individuals includes charges of racketeering, wire fraud and money-laundering conspiracies spanning two decades.

Beginning in 1991, two generations of soccer officials, including the then presidents of two regional soccer confederations under FIFA (one being the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football, known as
CONCACAF, which includes the US; and the South American Football Confederation, or CONMEBOL, which represents organized soccer in South America) used their positions of trust within their respective organizations to solicit bribes from sports marketers in exchange for the commercial rights to their soccer tournaments. They did this over and over, year after year, tournament after tournament.

The criminal activity that we identified did not solely involve sports marketing. Around 2004, bidding began for the opportunity to host the 2010 World Cup, which was ultimately awarded to South Africa: the first time the tournament would be held on the African continent. But even for this historic event, FIFA executives and others corrupted the process by using bribes to influence the hosting decision. The indictment also alleges that corruption and bribery extended to the 2011 presidential FIFA election, and to agreements regarding sponsorship of the Brazilian national soccer team by a major US sportswear company.

In short, these individuals, through these organizations, engaged in bribery to decide who would televise games, where the games would be held, and who would run the organization overseeing organized soccer worldwide, one of the most popular sports around the globe.

Life can be hard

A farmer had a dog who used to sit by the roadside waiting for vehicles to come around. As soon as one came he would run down the road, barking and trying to overtake it. One day a neighbor asked the farmer "Do you think your dog is ever going to catch a car?" The farmer replied, "That is not what bothers me. What bothers me is what he would do if he ever caught one." Many people in life behave like that dog who is pursuing meaningless goals.

Life is hard by the yard,
but by the inch,
it's a cinch.

From what I understand I would translate, literally: "A chair is useful when it is vacant". Perhaps in English it would make better sense to replace "chair" with "seat"?

I’ve been walked on, used and forgotten and I don’t regret one moment of it because in those moments, I’ve learned a lot. I’ve learned who I can trust and can’t. I’ve learned the meaning of friendship. I’ve learned how to tell when people are lying and when they’re sincere. I’ve learned how to be tough when necessary, and how to grow up when I need to. I’ve been to hell and back a few times, and I won’t ever take what I have for granted. This is life, live it one day at a time. You never know how many days you’ve got left. —

Don't take your troubles home with you

The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence.
On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching the tips of the branches with both hands. When opening the door he underwent an amazing transformation. His tanned face was wreathed in smiles and he hugged his two small children and gave his wife a kiss.
Afterward he walked me to the car. We passed the tree and my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about what I had seen him do earlier.
“Oh, that’s my trouble tree,” he replied.” I know I can’t help having troubles on the job, but one thing’s for sure, troubles don’t belong in the house with my wife and the children. So I just hang them on the tree every night when I come home. Then in the morning I pick them up again.”
He paused. “Funny thing is,” he smiled, “when I come out in the morning to pick ’em up, there ain’t nearly as many as I remember hanging up the night before.”

I saw a sign in Thai yesterday that said: Lose life; don't lose honesty/integrity. (I think it was: สียชีพ อย่าสียสัตย์.)

I couldn't disagree with it more. (Lie and stay alive or tell the truth and die?)

Apparently it is a motto of the Thai scout movement.

เสียชีพ อย่าเสียสัตย์  :)

Apparently it is a motto of the Thai scout movement.

It seems to be unique to the Thai movement only, rendered on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scout_Motto#Motto_in_various_languages) as Better to die than to lie.

Here they add under it: Better lose your belt than your trousers.

Taken out of context it doesn't mean much. You may apply it to any regime like anarchists do. Any regime is a tyranny to them, and they are not totally wrong. Montesquieu was referring to a specific historical conjuncture.

Does a poem count as a quote? I read this poem on one of those 'Poems on the Tube': it had a line I knew so well but had no idea who the poet was. Luckily everything is easily put into Evernote and Googled later. It is by Percy Bysshe Shelley.

I met a traveller from an antique land,
Who said—“Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed;
And on the pedestal, these words appear:
My name is Ozymandias, King of Kings;
Look on my Works, ye Mighty, and despair!
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal Wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away.”
