Title: Two ice rinks for Korat?
Post by: Alfie on March 21, 2016, 07:03:42 PM
The new Terminal 21 when it's finished will supposedly have an ice-rink (as was discussed here (http://korat-farang.com/forum/index.php?topic=8273.0)).

Now it appears that the Mall is also going to build one in (or and) something called Ice Planet - at an investment of 50 million baht.

Will there be enough interest or customers for 2 similar places in Korat? Will it lead to the failure of them both? Or will they complement each other?

First bowling alleys (a long time gone) and now ice rinks, only time will tell but I reckon at least one of them will be gone after a few years. I'm told that the mall are slowing down construction of their extension so that they open nearer the time of Terminal 21 opening in the hope that people stick with old faithful and shun the new kid on the block.

That's interesting. I was told it's on schedule? I don't really think the Mall see T21 as competition, in the sense they aren't a department store, although it's obviously competition for retail outlets. I'm curious to see if it replicates T21 at Asok, where it's mainly smaller, individual type retailers, who get away with high prices because of it's location and who it attracts. It's going to be different in Korat. I think there's generally a good relationship between the two Co's, after all, just as in Bkk, The Mall will be the supermarket provider.

First bowling alleys (a long time gone) and now ice rinks,

Yes, I remember those days. Klang Plaza and the Mall.

I reckon at least one of them will be gone after a few years.

I think so, too. I think one would see good business. Two will mean they both fail.

I'm told that the mall are slowing down construction of their extension so that they open nearer the time of Terminal 21 opening in the hope that people stick with old faithful and shun the new kid on the block.

The new building at the Mall is supposed to be finished on 29 September, Terminal 21 in October and Central in March next year.

And even worse than 2 ice-rinks for Korat will be 3 cinemas for Phimai!!! Tesco and Big C are now building new supermarkets in Phimai and apparently they will both have movie theatres. Added to the one there already is in Phimai, that will be three. It seems like overkill to me.

Opening of Terminal 21 has been postponed to December 2016 according to a Thai friend of mine who will be running a small shop inside there.

The Thai manager of Starbucks told us that they are moving in to the New Starbucks on September 28th or 29th (can't remember which), also said there will be 3 Starbucks, 1 in the Mall, 1 in Terminal 21 and 1 in Central Plaza.

Quite strange Tesco's are building big in Phimai when they have very little presence in Buriram (just the small Express store near the bus station)

The new building at the Mall is supposed to be finished on 29 September6

New wing opened today as announced. Last few days frantic works all along the front, old and new, and on the pedestrian bridge for new decor and putting signs up, with several cranes working at same time.

Now it's possible to hazard an answer to the question in the OP: "Two ice rinks for Korat?" YES, unless Terminal 21 will change their plans... The Mall's new wing will include a rink on 3rd floor, not finished yet. I wonder if the Terminal 21 management wasn't too rash in announcing about their ice rink project already last year. Like offering the idea on a silver plate to The Mall's management...

But if the question was: "A much needed additional pedestrian bridge on Mitthapap downtown?", then unfortunately the answer would be NO until now, as there are no traces yet of any works starting for a second flyover outside the new wing.

I don't know if the ice rink will be open by then, but you can still take your children for a train ride or to have fun at the Lego square. You jump on the train on 2nd floor outside S&P restaurant at the junction between old and new buildings. The Lego square is on ground floor of new wing, near that wing's main entrance.

1 hr for 280thb? By the time you try your boots size, rent it out, buy your socks etc... and the time taken to return... will probably eat up your 20mins i think...

Do they have a full day pricing? or can we buy using hours like 280thb x XXhrs?

Anyone knows?

Well now I will be getting plenty of SNOW this winter here in Eastern Ontario, just 1 hour drive from the Laurentian Ski resorts.
I just purchased a season pass at one of them for $300.00 CAD valid Monday thru Friday, no weekends. You don't want to be around in the weekends as 1/2 of Montreal gravitates to the Laurentian Ski resorts.

So by the time we return to KoratI will have had my fill of the white stuff and never want to see it in Thailand.

Now they aligned hundreds of flowerpots on the median strip there, probably also to prevent pedestrians from trying crossing hazardously (let them walk!).

The Snow Town, although  sharing a common entrance, is a private operation and not run by the Mall as is the ice rink. There used to be one at Gateway in Bkk and if it's anything like that, it will have artificial snow, toboggan slides and so on.

I'm in Korat at the moment and I'm quite impressed by the new Mall. A little sense of deja-vu today as much of what was going on is the same as at the opening of Bluport in Hua Hin last Saturday.

The kebab farang stand seems very popular, it's good that a local business that had a van and appeared at fairs has taken the big leap to rent in the Mall.

But I recall HL saying the lady who runs a burger stall at the Dusit night market was going to be in the Mall as well, but I haven't seen her.

Two adults and a child, over 1100 baht for an hour at weekends, 980 on weekdays. I told my wife the prices, she said she'll try it once.

and that's still uninclusvie of ice skates, which I suppose will be rented inside to rink users only (?)

I'm sure the "boots" include the 'skate' parts, Anton. I've been ice-skating in the UK and the blades are fixed to the boots.

By the way, will it be real ice on the ice-rink? I ask because I've been to an ice-rink in Bangkok and I'm pretty sure it wasn't ice but some synthetic material.

If you look back at that original post caller you will see that I added another post saying that the mall required her to sign a three year contract and she didn't want to tie herself up for that long, not knowing how things are going to be once terminal 21 and central plaza have opened. She has now opened an all day burger shop on the road opposite the Pegasus hotel and then opens in NBK market about 8pm.

That's what I think too. I doubt they would allow non-skaters to enter the rink. Bottom line is: we still don't know how much they charge for renting skates.

Correction: there's NO extra fee for boots and jackets! Misunderstanding caused by a wrong English translation: they translated "deposit" ค่ามัดจำ into "rental". Who will tell them now?
Title: Re: Two ice rinks for Korat?
Post by: Anton on October 11, 2016, 11:35:27 PM
By the way, will it be real ice on the ice-rink?

It's real ice being resurfaced every 90 minutes during a 30-minute break. This according to their Website, where you find also pricing conditions (http://www.therink-icearena.com/time-pricing.html). Still no mention of skates rental fee, thus I suppose they are included in The Rink's entry fee. They do rent out some "skating aids" as shown in first photo below.

The Snow Town, although  sharing a common entrance, is a private operation and not run by the Mall as is the ice rink.

Actually the company running the rink seems to be The Rink Ice Arena (http://www.therink-icearena.com/), already present in 4 other locations in Thailand as you can see. Prices and session hours indicated on their site differ from those already advertised for Snow & Ice Planet as per photo in reply no. 21, so I guess they are 2 separate businesses, each with its own different fees and conditions. What shown in reply no. 21 probably applies only to the playground part. That sign with the translation mistake wasn't there anymore today.

The Rink offers:

- Sessions of 60 or of 90 minutes, respectively 220 and 250 THB
- Daily sessions for 600 THB
- Half- and full-year passes, respecitvely 12,000 and 20,000 THB
- Skating courses
- Bumper car sessions

I went ice-skating yesterday. It was great! It cost me 220 baht for an hour, which was enough time for me.  Skates and helmet were included in the price. (90 minutes would have cost 260 baht.)

You can see below that you can also pay 600 baht for an all day ticket, 12,000 baht for 6 months and 20,000 baht for a year.

Yes, they are.

At the moment, Snow-town isn't fully completed so prices are reduced to reflect that (from 240 baht to 160 baht). From what I could see, only the snow-slide is open so kids spent their 45 minutes walking up the steps and sliding down the ice. They certainly seemed to be enjoying it.

Helmets weren't there the first few days, they introduced them yesterday or the day before I think.

I see now why they removed the price list.

You jump on the train on 2nd floor outside S&P restaurant at the junction between old and new buildings.

For a free train ride now you have to produce cash slips for at least 500 THB, according to this new sign they placed there. They nicknamed it "Smiley Train".

For a ride on the car mentioned by Waterheart (http://korat-farang.com/forum/index.php?topic=8345.msg66435#msg66435) they don't ask anything for the moment. You jump on it at the ground floor junction between old and new building.

Terminal 21 did a huge strategic mistake when they announced much in advance, i.e. at least 18 months before opening, that they would host a ice rink, offering The Mall the idea on a silver platter. The Mall than had the shrewdness to insert it into a bigger attraction park (Snow Planet), and to open it all before the opening of Terminal 21. The ice rink at Terminal had been operating virtually desert for months and months, I wonder how that company managed to keep it open that long, just think of energy costs involved... Now Terminal 21 has rounded up a wide area on that floor, wider than the previous rink area, and are announcing the opening of a new fun attraction. Let's hope it will be a real surprise this time.

I wonder too, and I also wonder what they were thinking getting involved in two ice-rinks in Korat. It's the same company who run the ice-rink in the Mall as was running it in Terminal 21. (The Rink Ice Arena) http://www.therink-icearena.com (http://www.therink-icearena.com)
