Title: So what are you watching right now ?
Post by: Roger on June 01, 2017, 03:26:25 PM
Well we just finished watching the 'digitally remastered' version of Fawlty Towers - it's much clearer than the VHS copy. With a 2nd DVD of interviews with the Cast including Prunella Scales, who is 85 this month. A few years ago she admitted that her Alzeimher problem was taking her over. And Connie Booth also gave an interview - I saw her on the West End stage years ago and was most impressed. Gorgeous Gal !

I thought 'La Vie en Rose' was a new film, (it's 2007 !) - just bought the DVD. Wonderful. Marion Cotillard, then about 30, does an amazing job as Edith Piaf. Apparently MC's make  up took 3-5 hours daily. Wonderful acting. (Another Gorgeous Gal !).

Working my way through the boxset of Kavanagh QC again after a 10 year lapse - I love Courtroom drama. Rumpole is another fantastic favourite.

I don't have bandwidth to stream movies unfortunately.

I just watched these two shorts on Youtube. The first was filmed downtown Korat in 2012; the second probably in the Saraburi/Nakhon Ratchasima border area in 2013. Both in a slowly spoken Thai, with English subtitles: good exercise for your language learning. Altogether, they last just about 25 min.

The first, Scavenger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2576474/), is a documentary about a poor man living with his family in a dump along the railway track downtown, without running water or electricity, but taking life very much philosophically ("If I was rich, I'd be just as happy as I am now"). Film is 5 years old but I think not much has changed over there in the meanwhile. We also see him riding his bike in downtown streets: maybe Trok Samorai at around 0:35; somewhere on Mitthapap at 0:47; accessing Jomsurangyard Rd, opposite Wat Jaeng Nok (http://korat-farang.com/forum/index.php?topic=8410.msg62994#msg62994), at 3:30.

The second, Clouds of Memory (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3111114/), is about Alzheimer disease striking a once active and successful, now old and lonely businessman. He and his friend talk about how good or bad it is to recover old memories, and about what really counts in life.

PS: Final credits to Scavenger (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2576474/) mention about a so-called "Soi Bele", at 8:56: And (featuring) the people of Soi Bele. That puzzled me because I never heard about it before, and it doesn't appear on any map I can lay my hands on. Then a Thai friend explained to me that it's probably a misunderstanding. At 6:04 the man describes settlements in that street as being totally unauthorized: "soi pen tuean pailoei" ซอยเป็นเถื่อนไปเลย. However, he pronounces that "pailoei" in the local way, sounding like "bele". If editors of final captions were not from Korat, they may have misunderstood it for the soi's name.

Scenes filmed in Korat in 1978, from Thai movie "Ka ma kon dieow" ข้ามาคนเดียว:

- Main railway station from the start (notice onlookers small crowd in the background)
- Yamo monument from 1:50
- Traffic passing by the monument from 2:20 (now pedestrian area)
- I think Klang Plaza 2, quite new at the time, if you look carefully at the scene starting at 1:37: the half-hidden building behind the actor and behind a tree?
- And... Who can recognize the exact location of short scene starting at 2:50?

I couldn't find this title on IMDB. For the whole movie, enter this string on Youtube and it will pop up first result in the list: หนังเก่า ข้ามาคนเดียว. This short video here was uploaded this morning.

I'd say the scene starting at 2:50 is at the junction of Ratchadamnern Road and Jomsurang Road, just along from Klang Plaza II.

At 2:51 you can see the direction of traffic. It matches the direction of traffic at that junction.

At 2:53 you can see traffic lights and a drain in the gutter. You can also see a concrete post, and you can see that the pavement is curved at that point. All those features are still there, except that the traffic lights are overhead now.

No, it cannot be Klang Plaza 2 because Klang Plaza 2 was not there yet at that time (I checked), it isn't shaped like that, it is much taller and looks much more massive from that distance.

Then this one must be one of two twin buildings in a row, the one formerly hosting Royal Princess bakery on the corner, circled in yellow in the photos below. You see it well at 2:38, it really looks alike if you observe closely.

The building seen at the far right side background in the same frame must be the one now hosting Mezzo Coffee, third photo below.

I'd say the scene starting at 2:50 is at the junction of Ratchadamnern Road and Jomsurang Road, just along from Klang Plaza II.

Resembling corner but it cannot be Alfie. If it was, the two twin buildings in the photos below should be there in the scene, instead of the market place. As just explained, the one in the yellow circle is seen at 2:38 in the video, while the one in the red circle is the same as the corner building in your photo.

Also, if you were right, what would be the long low building seen on the left side background, behind the market?

I wouldn't rely on traffic direction, it may have changed since.

Just watched Anton's 2 clips about the Swedes and Not being a sucker.
I suppose both clips are included as examples of 'bad attitudes' decades ago and do need to be seen in context, but crikey !

ON A HAPPIER NOTE 'Hold the sunset'  ;D

''It is 43 years since John Cleese last appeared in a BBC sitcom. You may remember it – hotel in Torquay, rude owner, hapless staff. Fawlty Towers only ran for 12 episodes in the Seventies but no British sitcom has ever had quite the same cultural impact. As Shane Allen, the BBC’s head of comedy commissioning, put it when he announced Cleese’s return: “His last one did alright.”''

This should be good - Alison Steadman is another of my favourites.

I hadn't watched those 2 clips before either and they sure are relevant today.

Anton used to make some good and interesting posts, disagreed with  some of them, but it is a shame that he has seemed to have stopped posting now.

I thought I'd posted about the film, 'Spotlight' before, but I can't find the previous post, so will start again. I need to correct the figures I quoted - the Boston Herald started hunting about 8 child abusing Priests, were tipped that there might be 90 and I think they found 250 - that's just Boston alone !

Same all over the USA. Same around the World. Words fail  :'(

I guess most have watched this already - but if not - recommended ! In this link, it's amazing how 'lookalike' the actors are, to the actual people  8)
