And they're off ! An impressive Liverpool victory against Norwich putting context to their brilliant promo season - ''Norwich started with eight of the players who began the last game of their Championship winning campaign''. I wonder if that faith will pay off for Norwich through the season ?

Let's see how Man City do without Kompany and with Mahrez playing more in Sane's absence. Big spenders again.

Man Utd lose the difficult Lukaku and keep the difficult Pogba - pundits saying Utd are very thin in midfield but have 7 senior centre backs on the books  :o  I hope flying Daniel James does well. OGS putting faith in youngsters and it'd be great to see that workout - but a poor start will see the vultures circling again.

I'm guessing Chelsea will do well with Lampard at the helm - top Guy IMO. CFC to beat Man Utd ?

Spurs have made some canny signings and Arsenal seem to have done sharp business. Disturbing news that Ozil and Kolazinac are not in the squad for Newcastle for 'security reasons'   :o  WHAT is going on there ?

If it should be raining up there, spend 2 minutes watching Don Rogers and Crystal Palace beat Man Utd 5-0 in 1972 - what an amazing Player he was . . .

From my dear ole' Torquay United there's been a few fine centre backs go up the Leagues (we get lots of practice defending) - I recall Matthew Elliot (Leicester and Scotland), Darren Moore (West Brom etc), Mike Williamson (Southampton and Newcastle) and latterly, Angus McDonald who went to Hull City via Barnsley.

He hasn't quite set the football world alight but having just recovered from DVT after a year off, he has been diagnosed with bowel cancer - just 26 years old. Wishing you all the best Angus . . .

Charlie Cooke was in the team as well! Great clip. Rogers ball control on those pitches was something else!

Hi Caller - I freely admit Don Rogers is my hero  8)   Saw his first game for Swindon Reserves when he was 16 - autograph and all   ;)   Once saw him take Peter Rodriguez (Leicester and Wales) from corner flag area diagonal to the other end, back to the penalty area to slot it in, evading numerous tackles on the way !

This prog shows the 1969 defeat of Arsenal at a ploughed Wembley but at 19.40 secs, there's a better look at that Man Utd game. He could have scored a few more that day !

The new goalkick rule is causing havoc at top clubs. Both Man City and Arsenal concede goals trying to play out from a goal kick while being pressed. Occasionally it might be better to just hoof it up the pitch especially as this will bypass half the opposition.

Wayne Rooney will shortly return to English football at Derby County - I wonder how much they are paying him and how that will affect the motivations in the rest of the Squad ? His Missis will be glad to have him back in the range of a swift left hook to help him behave himself. (Wayne's younger Brother John turns out for Barrow at Torquay today).

Goalkeepers - always most open to criticism . . . Sheff Utd's Dean Henderson lets in a goal that Geoff Boycott's Mum would have saved and he makes the England squad shortly afterwards ! NO excuse for him but generally, since the introduction of the lighter footballs many decades ago, you just don't see a Goalie give consistent faultless displays - these balls travel much faster and swerve markedly. Ron Springett, Gordon Banks, Peter Downsborough  ;)  and Peter Shilton couldn't look as good these days. Another point - Goalies seem to be coached to stay low not stand up and IMO it's wrong - an EPL Goalie last weekend - the attacker about 4 metres out on the left, angle maybe 15 degrees, the Goalie has narrowed the angle but is on his knees and the shot goes in over his low head and hands   ???   Effing stand up   ;)   No need to spread to cover a 15 degree angle   ::)

Spurs and Man Utd has faltered and have lost their way - at Man Utd that's despite having a squad with some on GBP200-350K per week. Arsenal flailing too and Ozil can't make the bench atm - GBP350K per week. Many Players reach a peak but don't sustain it - greedily signing Players at their peak on massive contracts means Clubs are then saddled with ransom wages. Man Utd's Sanchez comes to mind too. Just MO but a limit of GBP100K pw is enough and a 2 year rolling contract should also be the maximum allowed. The present situation is farcical and in the end, it's the Fans that pay for it, one way or another.

:o   :o  Leicester score NINE at Southampton   :o   :o  and whoops that happens to be more AWAY goals than Man Utd have scored in total since OGS took over in March   ::)

Liverpool have made an amazing start - last week's draw followed 17 successive EPL wins. Man City have a lot of injuries. My guess is that Liverpool are going to follow up their Champions League triumph with a long overdue EPL title this season . . . . .

Hi Alfie. There was debate on the Torquay Fan site about the decision to send off Junior John Rooney. Until someone enlightened us that he had screamed at close quarters to the REF - "You TW*T". He had to go. Quite charming. To be regretted as he has had a good season until then with 8 goals - the 3rd highest tally.

Brother Wayne as he reaches the end of his career faces a problem - is he going to get a managerial, coaching or punditry role later ?  A bucketful of goals at Derby will help but . . . .
