As the self-quarantined returnees arrives - panic all the way

The Mall closes stores for sanitising after visit by Thai labourer back from South Korea

The Mall Bangkae department store has closed shops at risk of Covid-19 from March 6 to 8, for cleaning and sterilising, operator The Mall Group announced on Friday, after being visited by a Thai labourer who had just returned from South Korea.

On Thursday (March 5), a Thai labourer, who had returned recently from South Korea, a high-risk country for Covid-19, visited the department store and took photographs of herself in the shops and uploaded them on Facebook.

The department store took the safety measure after it was brought to its attention.

The Mall Bangkae has urged those who worked in the shops to quarantine themselves at home for 14 days.   nationthailand.com

Entertainment venue closed for sanitisation after visitor found to have returned from Taiwan    nationthailand.com

An entertainment venue in Khon Kaen province was closed for a day to undergo complete cleaning after being visited by a woman who had been to a Covid-19 high-risk area.

Natthawut Thewapithak, manager of Tawandang Mahason, an entertainment venue in Khon Kaen’s Mueang district, said in a statement on Friday (March 6) that his establishment will be closed for one day for cleaning and preparing measures to prevent the possible spread of the new coronavirus after it was visited by a Thai woman who had just come back from Taipei, a territory considered high risk for Covid-19 infection.

According to a news source, the announcement came after the woman took a selfie at a restroom of Tawandaeng Mahason on March 4 and posted it on social media, while earlier on March 2 she had posted a selfie taken at Taoyuan International Airport in Taipei, saying that she was returning home from a shopping trip.

Netizens were upset after seeing the photos that she did not go through the mandatory 14-day self-quarantine after visiting a high-risk place but had instead visited a crowded entertainment venue with more than 1,000 attendants.

Natthawut said that he had ordered staff to clean the tables, chairs, restrooms and all equipment with disinfectants to ensure the safety of customers. “Furthermore, we will use thermo-scanner on attendants and will ask those with fever higher than 37.5 degrees Celsius to refrain from going in,” he added. “We have also urged both customers and staff to use hand sanitiser gel both before and after using the restrooms.”

‘Little ghost’ gets Chiang Mai spooked

A “little ghost” has apologised after causing alarm in Chiang Mai by posting on social media photos of herself drinking in a pub – almost as soon as she returned home from her illegal job in South Korea.

The woman, who has not been named, has met with health authorities after being prodded by the police and has been cleared of Covid-19 viral infection.

The photos posted online on Thursday (March 5) had the caption “Let’s kill coronavirus” – presumably with an alcoholic drink.

She said she just got home from Incheon, South Korea, and was ignoring the authorities’ request to spend 14 days at home in self-quarantine.

The post was widely shared and triggered fear and outrage.

As an illegal labourer overseas, she’s referred to in Thailand as phi noi – a “little ghost”

Dr Chatuchai Maneerat of the Chiang Mai Public Health Department said police got in touch with the woman and determined she’d actually returned from Anyang in the province of Gyeonggi on Wednesday.

She reported to the health office at noon on Friday, showing no fever or other symptoms.

She agreed to abide by the 14-day self-quarantine directive and apologised to the public for her “ignorance”

Air Force prepares flying school to serve as quarantine area for South Korea returnees

The Flying Training School will be ready on March 10 to serve as a quarantine area for Thai labourers returning from South Korea, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) said on Saturday (March 7).

Air Force spokesman Air Marshall Pongsak Semachai said that local people had opposed the use of the Air Force Residence Bor Fai to be the quarantine area for Thai labourers who could be at risk for Covid-19 infection from South Korea but they don’t have to worry anymore.

“We will use the Flying Training School in Kamphaengsaen district, Nakhon Pathom province, to be the quarantine area for returnees from South Korea instead of the Air Force Residence Bor Fai,” he said.

“Air Force commander, Air Chief Marshall Maanat Wongwat, has appointed Air Chief Marshall Saritphong Wattanawarangkul, chief of executive staff committee to the commanders to lead the Ministry of Public Health officials on area surveillance and they agreed that it was appropriate.”

He explained that this school has various facilities which separated from barracks. Also, the area was located near Chandrubeksa Hospital and was far from the community area.

“This school will be ready for use on March 10, but it’s up to the decision of the government and the Ministry of Public Health whether they will use this place to be a quarantine area,” he added.

59 Thais from S Korea lodged at naval facility in Sattahip for 14-day quarantine

A group of 59 Thais -- 27 men and 32 women -- who returned from South Korea on Saturday night have been lodged at a naval reception facility in Sattahip district of Chon Buri for a 14-day quarantine as a measure to stem the coronavirus spread.

They were among a number of passengers who arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport in a flight from South Korea. After an initial screening, the 59 were taken in three buses to the naval facility in Chon Buri's Sattahip district -- the same location where Thais who returned from China's Wuhan were quarantined last month.

The Royal Thai Navy has prepared six buildings at the reception centre to accommodate the returnees.

The 59 Thais arrived at the reception centre at 1.15am on Sunday.  After undergoing a sterilisation procedure, they were lodged in buildings 3, 4 and 5, where they are to undergo a 14-day quarantine.

The facility is tightly guarded around the clock by naval soldiers.

70-80 Thai workers returning from South Korea 'have fled quarantine'

Deputy Health Minister Satit Pitutecha said on Saturday (Mar 7) that all Thais returning from South Korea from Sunday (March 8.) will be transferred to the Sattahip Army Base in Chonburi province, to screen for Covid-19 symptoms. Those having fever will be sent to a hospital. The measures also apply to foreigners, who could be shifted to a hotel if they are in good health.

The returning Thai labourers will be in quarantine at Sattahip Army house.

Satit admitted that 200 Thai labourers had arrived. Some of them were resisting the screening measure from the health officers and some 70-80 had fled.

The Department of Disease Control has checked their travel history in order to bring them back to quarantine and punish them under the Disease Control Act.

Bt10,000 reward for arrest of illegal labourers who don’t undergo self-quarantine

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob today (March 9) announced that a reward of Bt10,000 would be given for the arrest of each illegal Thai worker returning from South Korea who "escapes" airport disease checkpoints or does not undergo 14 days of self-quarantine.

He said the ministry is coordinating with immigration officials to provide travel history, personal information and pictures to the Department of Disease Control so the public can be alerted to such a group of workers.

Meanwhile, Nakhon Ratchasima Governor Wichian Chantarothai and Suranaree Camp Hospital director Major Surasak Thanadsidhama will check two quarantine areas for labourers returning from South Korea and capable of accommodating 180 people

AOT, Novotel Suvarnabhumi arrange 100 rooms for quarantime at hotel

Airports of Thailand (AOT) has collaborated with Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport to provide 100 rooms in the hotel for Covid-19 quarantine, Prasong Poontaneat, Airports of Thailand chairman of the board of directors, said.

AOT’s purpose is to support foreign tourists who travel to Thailand before the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand issued a regulation requiring medical certificates from foreign passengers before they are on board.

The regulation requires 14 days of quarantine but the government could not find proper accommodation so AOT decided to help out. The quarantine zones will be separate between arrivals and departures, the chairman said.

Novotel Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport is the only hotel at the airport that has 612 rooms with facilities, food court, bar, spa, swimming pool and fitness centre. It is located five minutes from the airport.
