Twins confess to attack on Nitirat leader

Twin brothers have confessed to assaulting Nitirat group core leader Worajet Pakeerat at Thammasat University on Wednesday, police say.

They turned themselves in to police after security pictures were aired in the media of the suspected attackers waiting at the university.

Police said the pair admitted attacking the law lecturer, who as part of the Nitirat group is campaigning for an amendment to Section 112 of the Criminal Code, or the lese majeste law.

Supoj and Supat Silarat, 30, told police the attack spurred from "differences in opinions," city police chief Pol Lt Gen Winai Thongsong said yesterday.

Pol Lt Gen Winai declined to say whether the suspects belonged to an anti-Nitirat group.

"Let's say they have confessed [to attacking Mr Worajet] because they have different opinions [from Mr Worajet's]," Pol Lt Gen Winai said.

The suspects said they were not hired by anyone to assault the lecturer.

Mr Worajet said on Wednesday the attackers rushed him from behind and punched him in the face when he was walking towards his car.

Asked by reporters why they attacked Mr Worajet, Mr Supat answered they were "upset" with the lecturer.

Mr Supoj and Mr Supat were charged with physical assault, which carries a maximum prison term of three years and a fine of up to 6,000 baht.

A police source said the brothers worked as security guards at a pub in Pathum Thani. Mr Supat was previously arrested in another assault case.

The twins will spend a bit of time indoors for their actions.

Nitirat Leader's Attackers Get Jail Sentence

The court has sentenced the twin brothers who attacked the leader of the Nitirat Group to a three-month jail term. One was also handed down an additional seven-month sentence for a prior firearm possession charge.

The Dusit Court has sentenced Supot and Supat Silarat, twin brothers, to six months imprisonment for assaulting Worachet Pakeerat, a law professor who is also the leader of the Nitirat group at Thammasat University on February 29.

However, as the defendants confessed to their crime, the sentence was commuted to three months.

The court handed down an additional seven month jail term for Supot, the older brother, for a prior firearm possession charge, bringing his total jail term to ten months.

The court refused to suspend the sentence as their action was viewed as blatant disregard of the law.

They have been released on bail of 100,000 baht bond posted by their relatives, pending the appeals process.

I'm surprised to see the criminal justice system working so quickly. A good sign.
