What kind of snakes in Korat ?
« on: May 02, 2013, 09:46:29 PM »

My sister in law said there was a large snake on the drive in front of our house this morning. We are about 18km out of Korat and surrounded by rice fields, plenty of trees too. Have had rat snakes of all sizes before but this sounds bigger, do we have pythons or any other large snakes around here ? Unfortunately there is no photo as she legged it.

Any ideas ?

I've seen quite a few Burmese Pythons around. Some of them have been quite big. One was VERY big. I've also seen a few snakes that I think are cobras, but I'm not totally sure about that. And I've seen a couple of bright green snakes that both fell from higher places (a tree and a truck). I don't know what kind they were.

Thanks for the info. I suggested to them it might be big rat snake but they said no and that it was fatter. I wonder if the dog is still around ! Anyway, still none the wiser, I just hope I don't bump into it next time I'm out there.

About 2 years ago I was out of the country, and my wife told me the old village drunk had found a pythons nest with eggs in it, He asked if anyone wan ted to buy them, and went back into the bush to get the eggs. Never returned. The next day people went looking for him. He was dead, crushed by the python near her nest. Strangely the snake hadnt tried to devour him, probably the smell of Thai whisky on him turned her off... Have killed a few small (1 metre) ones in our yard, seen plently more when walking my dogs.

Burmese Python

A big snake that slipped into the engine of a street vendor's pick-up car in Korat last night, looks like the one in the photo. Rescue squad had to intervene.

Yes, they are saying it's a Burmese python (งูหลาม).

Here's a good video to help you differentiate between a Burmese python (งูหลาม) and a reticulated python (งูเหลือม ).

Yes, they are saying it's a Burmese python (งูหลาม).

Another similar looking one, 2 m long, crawled into a house in Suebsiri area downtown last night. Here they talk about a reticulated python งูเหลือม though. News report in first video, first snake they talk about. Second video shows it a little better.
