FIVB Girls' U18 Volleyball World Championship in Korat
« on: May 10, 2013, 05:37:59 PM »

The FIVB Girls' U18 Volleyball World Championship will be held in Korat from July 26 to August 4, 2013.

Hosts Thailand are in Pool A along with European champs Poland, African-best Egypt, the U18 Pan-Am Cup winners Puerto Rico and world No 16 Tunisia.

Pool B has Asian powerhouses and three-time world champs China, Asian champs Japan, and Serbia, Argentina and Greece.

Brazil - also three-time world champions - line up in Pool C along with the USA, Dominican Republic, Algeria and Slovenia, while Italy joined title-holders Turkey, Peru, Mexico and Taiwan in Pool D.

Thailand and Egypt play the curtain-raiser on July 26 at Chartchai Gym. The top four teams in each group will advance to the knock-out second round.

Pool A and C clashes will be held at Chartchai Gym, while the adjacent Liptapanlop Gym will host Pool B and D matches. Thailand face Egypt in the opening fixture on July 26.

The lowest-ranked team in each group after the preliminaries will be eliminated, with the top four teams advancing to the second round.

Nakhon Ratchasima’s governor, Vinai Buapradit, said the region was well prepared. “We are greatly honoured to host the World Championship and I would like to confirm that we are ready for the tournament. Nakhon Ratchasima’s residents look forward to welcoming you and all foreign guests during the meet,” he said.

Thailand’s coach, Apichart Kongsawat, was optimistic of home success. “Most teams in our pool are Africans and I think we have almost the same standard,” he said. “Pool B might be the toughest draw. I’m upbeat that playing on home soil and with long-term preparation, we should advance to the second round without much effort.”

Its the reason the Sima Thai is pretty full. The other day when I stayed there, I shared a floor with the Peruvians, which had its attractions. Also noticed the Poles and Argentinian in residence. Also noticed the hotel was selling beer on the Tuesday just gone, after I had already bought some from a 'mom & pop' shop, thinking they wouldn't.
