"The comedian and actor Roy Hudd has died, aged 83. Best known for presenting the Roy Hudd Show and BBC Radio 2’s The News Huddlines between 1975 and 2001, he also starred in Coronation Street. His agent said in a statement on Monday: “After a short illness, Roy passed away peacefully on the afternoon of Sunday the 15th of March, with his wife, Debbie, at his side. The family would ask you to respect their privacy at this very sad time.”

Born in Croydon, south London, Hudd began his comedy career in the 1950s, and performed as a Butlin’s redcoat in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex, where he worked alongside Cliff Richard and Dave Allen. First appearing on Not So Much a Programme on the BBC, he made his name on television in the 60s in sketch shows including The Illustrated Weekly Hudd and The Roy Hudd show. On Radio 2, he hosted The News Huddlines, a satirical sketch show that also featured June Whitfield and Chris Emmett

Sir Stirling Moss: Motor racing legend dies aged 90 after long illness

British motor racing legend Sir Stirling Moss has died at the age of 90 following a long illness.

He is widely regarded as one of the greatest Formula 1 drivers of all time, even though he did not win the World Championship.

Moss retired from public life in January 2018 because of ongoing health problems.

"It was one lap too many, he just closed his eyes," said his wife Lady Moss.

Moss previously spent 134 days in hospital after suffering a chest infection while on holiday in Singapore in December 2016.

Moss' former team Mercedes said motorsport had "lost not only a true icon and a legend, but a gentleman", while 1996 F1 champion Damon Hill said Moss "launched all the other careers of British racing drivers who went on to become world champions".

Three-time F1 world champion Jackie Stewart, who came into the sport shortly after Moss' retirement in 1961, told BBC Radio 5 Live: "He walked like a racing driver should walk, he talked like a racing driver, he looked like a racing driver and he set a standard that I think has been unmatched since he retired."

In the seventies I took my father from The Netherlands to England to watch the game Chelsea versus Manchester United. On the field were players like Peter Bonetti, Bobby Charlton and George Best. My father was very surprised to see many people around us stood up when Cheksea scored but the same happened when Man United scored. Those were the days, and thatswhy I still remember the name Peter Bonetti, may he rest in peace.

It was a sad day yesterday, Tim Brook-Taylor, Stirling Moss and Peter Bonetti.

Being a Chelsea fan and starting supporting in the mid sixties, when my Dad started taking me to games with him, Bonetti was very much a fixture of my life in that great team of the late sixties and early seventies and then later, when the bad times began and then got better again, with McCreadies team built around Ray Wilkins with the Cat back in goal, all seemed well, then McCreadie left and down we went again.

I met Bonetti a couple of times and he was lovely. I think the fact he was a local Putney lad like we (my mates) all were, created another link to him and the team, but then, in those days, many players had local connections, like Alan Hudson.

Oh well, another part of that of that great team heads for the great reunion in the sky, you're in good company Peter! Thanks for the wonderful memories.

"Robinson’s death, two years after it was announced that his skin cancer had metastasised, stirred many thoughts. One was that people are still dying of things other than coronavirus (which is not to relegate that cause of death). Another was that very few stars who grow up ingrained with the English football culture find themselves absorbed by another. Robinson went further, planting himself, through the television screen, in every home of his adopted country."
