Work begins on new Ayutthaya-Ratchasima motorway

    WRITER: AMORNRAT MAHITTHIROOK

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Wednesday inaugurated the construction of a new 196-kilometre inter-city tollway being built at a cost of 84.6 billion baht from Ayutthaya province via Saraburi to Nakhon Ratchasima.

The launching ceremony for Highway No.6 was held at the 99 kilometre marker of the Phahon Yothin Highway in Nong Khae district, Saraburi. It is scheduled for completion in four years.

The new motorway starts from the Bang Pa-in interchange, where Highway No.9 (Bangkok's eastern ring road) adjoins Highway No.1 (Phahon Yothin Road) in Ayutthaya. It will parallel Phahon Yothin and Highway No.2 (the Mitrapharp Highway) and will finish at the 2 kilometre marker of the Nakhon Ratchasima Bypass.

The new motorway will have 4-6 lanes and pass Bang Pa-in, Wang Noi and Uthai districts of Ayutthaya; Nong Khae, Muang Saraburi, Kaeng Khoi and Muak Lek districts of Saraburi; and Pak Chong, Sikhiu, Sung Noen, Kham Thale So and Muang Nakhon Ratchasima districts of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Tolls on the new motorway will be based on travelling distance. A motorist's entry will be recorded and the appropriate rate charged at the exit point. The Highways Department has scheduled completion of the tollway  for 2020.

The new motorway is part of a 535km inter-city motorway network from Bangkok to the northeasternmost province of Nong Khai.

Who cares for high-speed rail anyway  ::)

Anyone know of a detailed map of the route? I'm particularly interested in the section from Kham Tale So to the bypass. I've found a couple of maps on the net but need a zoomed in view.

There are some more details about the new road on this video.

Thanks for that Alfie, I just wanted to know how close it will come to my house and some land the family has.

The video seems to show more accurate parts than the maps suggest. Looks like the motorway will join the bypass just south of the PTT stations. The elevated section going past Lam Ta Kong looks a bit scary.

Yes, the video is quite informative. It says the speed limit will be 120km/h. I like that. ;D

The original post says that the new Highway will finish by the 2 kilometre marker but the videos shows it near the PTT stations, the 2 kilometre marker is south of Homepro not long after you come off the bridge from the 304. I wonder which one it will be.

If you check this website it shows the location of the interchange.

Also links to the road that runs over to the intersection by the Pegazus Tower Hotel, which is already a nightmare.

Aren't they using the term "District" inappropriately there? Don't we commonly intend it as the translation of Amphoe, like "Subdistrict" is the common translation of Tambon?

the road that runs over to the intersection by the Pegazus Tower Hotel

That road is locally known as "Sura 2". For your info  :)

Thanks Anton, I have not been able to find the name on the maps I have been viewing, my wife does not know the name of this road, but then when I ask her for directions its always "Over There" LOL

"Sura 2" is a nickname due to presence of eponymous school on it (in full: Suranari 2 school). For other names, see this post.

Thanks for that, Anton. Good video. I've been impressed with how much work they've done (and how quickly) along the stretch of road near Lam Takong. I drove past there today and thought about stopping to take some photos. Now you've posted the video, there's no need. :)

Motorway 6: Bang Pa In - Korat
« Reply #16 on: July 05, 2018, 06:46:23 AM »

If you've been on the highway between Korat and Bangkok in the last two years you will have seen construction of Motorway 6 along the way; especially the spectacular elevated section along Lam Takhong Reservoir.

Construction has proceeded apace in and around Korat. I will post a few photos later.

Here are a couple of maps showing the new motorway. The black and white map shows construction in the local area while the colored map shows the approximate route of the entire motorway. If someone has a better map, please post. The one I have is sorely lacking in detail.

These photos show construction at three places:

  • Ban Khon Chum near HomePro Bypass
  • Ban Si Mum at Highway 2198
  • Ban Kham Talay Soh at Highway 2068

This photo shows paving of a ground level portion near Ban Si Mum. As far as I can tell, the highway is only elevated along Lam Takhong Reservoir where space is limited and where the highway crosses over existing roads. I have ridden my bicycle from the interchange with Hwy 204 at HomePro Bypass to the Hwy 2068 overpass just north of Kham Talay Koh.

You can see the motorway construction clearly in Google Maps satellite view.
