Thailand’s house and office phone numbers will have 10 digits instead of nine in a major change which will be completed in three years.

Minister of Digital Economy and Society Pichet Durongkaveroj said that the National Digital Economy and Society Committee’s meeting headed by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Sept6 approved in principle the change of fixed line phone numbers to be 10 digits instead of nine digits as it is now.

The phone numbers which begin with 02, 03, 05 and 07 and followed by seven digits will have number 1 added after number 0 as the 10th digit. Also, the prefix two digits of the fixed line phone numbers will be used as the prefix two digits of mobile phones.

Mr Pichet explained that the change to 10 digits for office and house phone numbers will increase mobile phone numbers in Thailand to 760 million numbers instead of 52.5 million numbers which are expected to be used up by year 2020.

Meanwhile, the number of house and office phone numbers will be doubled to 100 million from currently 50 million, said Mr Pichet, adding, however, that Thailand will be required to inform the International Telecommunications Union about the change two years in advance.
