NAKHON RATCHASIMA, 8 December 2017 (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives has unveiled Thailand’s first-ever unmanned tractor in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Deputy Commerce Minister Chutima Bunyapraphasara presided over the debut of the country's first robot tractor at a cassava plantation in Nong Bua Sala subdistrict. The tractor was developed through collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA), and Hokkaido University. The machine is operated by a computer tablet using a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS).

In addition to farming tasks, this innovation can help agriculturists plan their planting and harvesting cycles, as it can store real-time data on soil conditions. Chutima hailed the unmanned tractor as a major step towards so-called "Smart Farming" and a praiseworthy example of multi-sector teamwork.

Hi Alfie. I've seen the hovering hoovers and apparently there's a lawn mower available on the same principles. But I don't think 'unmanned' tractors and 'driverless' cars will have much impact in the future. I mean, if you've a tractor and a man, why not sit him on the tractor where he can see what's going on ? Surely he's better off there ? And you'd save the cost of a laptop !

(I'm thinking about the unmanned lawnmower though ! I had 3 petrol mowers when I lived on the K Resort but now have just a Bosch cordless strimmer to do about 15-20m2 - it takes ages). ATB

Unmanned tractor in Thailand?  Probably be safer than one with Somchai driving it!

Here they got carried away: they say it's the first in the world (PS turn your speakers' volume down before starting it):

It is undoubtedly the first in Korat, but in a simple google search I found this from 2009:

I think if sonchai can afford one of these he will be siting in a sala overlooking the field with his Hi soi tractor working away, with an icy cold hong thong or Chang in his hand.

Scenario: "Now field is plowed how does somchai drive trator to next field as this was not programmed into tractors computer, LOL" I could see this stuck in the ditch......
